The 10R80 may be strong, but it is nowhere near as user friendly as a PDK. The PDK shifted in milliseconds, the 10R80 takes centuries to follow my command.

I tell the 10R80 to downshift, wait a second, tap down, wait a second, tap down, wait then B-A-N-G it shifts three at once feels like I hit a tree.

Ford's manual transmission has problems and their automatic also has problems. The ZF (6 speed manual) in my 335Xi is fun and willing to play. The PDK is a joy.

Why can't Ford and GM make a fun transmission?

The Tremec TR-9070 in the GT500 is more of an apples to apples comparison to the PDK no? DCT to DCT.

Having both a 10R80 GT and a GT500, I can say the Tremec DCT is fantastic and night and day from the 10 speed.

Congrats, you cracked the code on why your auto only cost $1600 more over base, compared to cars with PDKs that start at double the Mustang base price.

I knew I would hate the 10 speed any time I had to downshift at speed. No way you'd catch me buying an automatic Mustang.

To be fair, BMW can't either.

They contract it out, and even still the shifting is rubbery and a Honda has better feel.

They outsource fun transmissions to Tremec. 😜

Your experience with the 10R80 might be even worse than mine. Your description of the 10R80 sounds like my experience with a 2008 Mazda rental car.

I rented a 2019 Mustang and drove it in the mountains of Virginia, and that 10R80 couldn't find the right gear with a flashlight. Its main redeeming quality was that I could override it with the input paddles. It certainly responded to my inputs faster than the previous automatic I drove.
...But then the override could time out. If I didn't have a reason to shift before it timed out, it was going to shift up 2 gears or more and bog the engine down again.
Basically, I was babysitting the transmission computer because it couldn't be trusted on its own.

Now that I own a Mustang, I like the MT82 a lot better than I liked the slushbox in that rental car.

They do. It's the MT-82.
Ford and GM don't make that. Getrag makes that, at a factory in a communist country.
Ford and GM have outsourced manual transmissions since at least the 1980s.
The best ones come from Mexico: TREMEC = TRansmisiones y Equipos MECanicos.

Not only is it no PDK, it's not even in the same league as the ZF 8-speed....

I agree that the 10r80 is lacking when compared to other sports autos/DCT, but I wouldn't call it slow or terrible. Drove my brother's M340i with the ZF8 speed again a couple days ago and its more responsive(paddles) and smooth, but felt almost too soft and muted. Maybe it would have felt better in a V8 mustang

I'm curious to see if/how a 10r80 tune will improve shift response time to paddles.
