OIL FILTER do they loosen

Today was her first oil change just over 900 miles, found oil leaking around the filter. So did the factory screwup, or do these loosen?

Not properly torqued is my guess if the old style filter.

They sure do! Mine loosened up after 1000 miles two full turns. Thank God I always look under all my cars after I pull them out of their spot.

Yes they do. Even when tightened to 16-18 ft lbs. I used a sharpie to mark the filter position. It moved after a week. The Voodoo shakes the filter loose if not careful.

After 16K miles and 3 oil/filter changes I have not had any problems with the filter going loose or leaking. I just make sure it was properly torqued.

If a bead of oil is put on filter gasket (as manual says to to) and properly torqued I think even though not impossible it would be very rare for one to work loose.

I have double checked the tightness of my filter and I agree with [MENTION=27129]johnny1[/MENTION]. I applied oil to the gasket and torqued to spec. I checked it a couple days later and it was tighter - meaning as the oil migrates away from the gasket the filter grips onto the engine block more tightly. And breaking the filter loose for an oil change took significantly more than 18 ft-lbs.

I thought I read somewhere that you do not apply oil to the rubber o ring on the filter. Torque dry I thought.

You did read it. I'm not sure but think the guy is banned for some reasons (may not be related to this I don't know) He was stating that manual said you were not to oil the gasket. I called him out on it cause the manual specifically says you are to oil the gasket (just as done with other cannister filters) Never heard another word out of him, hope no one followed what he said without looking in there manual first. The key thing after you do that is to torque it to specifications.

I don't know who stated that, but if I remember correctly, my first GT350 supplemental manual said NOT to put oil on the gasket. The one that shipped with my filter wrench, filter, etc., was updated and stated to APPLY oil on the filter gasket. I'm guessing the first was a typo or poor recommendation by Ford. I'm glad I didn't initially read the supplemental manual when changing the oil......

Which kind of filter? I'm guessing you mean the older type, but you could have a newer 17 and have the cartridge/canister type. I've heard of the older ones loosening for various reasons (mainly due to improper torqueing when installing), but I've yet to hear of the newer style backing out yet.

only loosens when my dealer touches the car

I DD mine...had them do the recall and since they are in there, change the oil and filter. I didn't check the filter torque, drove for 2 weeks, went to track and it started spewing oil in the paddock. Didn't notice until the second run that there was oil actively dripping down in my parking spot. i guess it was good it loosened at track when i would be paying attention to this type of thing vs taking a long road trip and have it drain the engine while i was on the highway.

Hmmm, I'm curious. "First oil change at 900 miles" hints that your car might have the newer style canister oil filter. If it is the newer style oil filter, this could be perhaps the first reporting of those coming loose.

Do you know which type you have? Or your car's build date?
