Btw, I noticed Walmart sells the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 for $24.31, with free shipping. Bought 4 jugs. Even the service rep at the local Ford dealer recommended I switch to 5w30 if I like to run it hard on occasion.

Most associate Titanium as a mailable Metal.
I’m thinking more along the line of;
Titanium dioxide........
Just a guess,
What ever the Castrol chemists figured out they moved forward with a Patent.
More than a few OEM’s spec. Castrol Professional Edge during warranty.

Lots of factors to consider, Its a personal choice what to pour in our crankcases.
Oil tribology evolves rapidly.

I had initial MC factory oil ticking, switched to M1 5W20, no change to ticking, Castrol Edge 5W30 made ticking worse instantaneously. I think it has to do with viscosity than additives, although who knows.

It's not just the viscosity, it's the shear strength you need to look at. The shear strength tells you how well it holds up to impact pressure between the two metal surfaces. Here's what you were using.

- Mobil 1 EP 5w20 ~ 94,700psi
- Castrol Edge 5w30 ~ 95,000psi
- Motorcraft 5w20 ~ 72,000psi

Guys who say they have had great success in less ticking noise, which I still think is piston slap, generally do better with the heavier 5w30 and 5w50 oils that have higher shear strength.

- Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 ~ 115,000psi
- Mobil 1 5w30 ~ 117,000psi

This doesn't mean shear strength alone is the answer, because lubricity additives like Boron also make a big difference. Pennzoil Ultra uses Boron as a primary lubricity additive, instead of Zinc like Mobil 1, Castrol and Motorcraft. Boron is actually even more slippery.

Believe it or not, I think the shear strength rating of Rotella T6 is actually quite low, like Motorcraft (guesing about 75,000psi). However, because Rotella has GOBS of Zinc and other additives, the zinc cushions the impact of components so much that it quiets down the engine quite a bit. I know there is one guy on YouTube that quieted down the tick in his engine using T6 5w40. Unfortunately, that oil is really rated for diesel only. I'm not sure the effect it will have on that engine or emission components over the long term. The T6 5w30 rated for gas has much less Zinc than the 5w40 diesel version.

Thx, but I’m referring to the new Rotella T-6 0W-40 that’s both CJ and SN rated.
I’ve been a Castrol Professional (Dealer sold only) oil user for years but just this past year Castrol no longer blends the Professional oil in Germany. The USA bottled Castrol Pro isn’t the same as the former imported oil.

I wonder if anyone here has tried regular Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic 5w30. It's only about $22/jug at Walmart, and has a shear strength rating of 117,000psi at 230F.

I think the normal oil temp on the Mustang GT is about 200-230F, even with some spirited driving. I believe 210F is the center of the oil temp digital gauge.

The Pennzoil UP 5W30 that I purchased and what’s available at Walmart is the SN rated version and is rated at 99,000 psi. #58 on the list. I don’t have BBQ Tick after changing to it but I did use TriboTex in the oil previous to this change.

Each time I changed my oil I never thought to look into the empty jug to see if I had any left over additives. Now that I know I’ve been wasting them I’m wondering how many others have too and if those deter BBQ Tick.

Anyone ever paid attention on this "piston damege" notice on MC bottle?

Pretty weird notice for oil.

Like piston damage is something everyone knows of, happens every day here and there.

Ahem... bottle above I pictured in walmart today, but bottle in this post is one I bought last summer for topping oil since my engine was consuming some.

Are you able to look in the bottom of your MC and see if there’s any additive sediment?
