SAE sets the viscosity numbers. 5w is not some number they pick out of the sky.

I've used blackstone for many years so I know what the numbers mean.

So explain how a 5w50 is considerably thicker at cold startup than a 10w30? By your reasoning, the 5w should be thinner than the 10w.

Also why is the 0w40 thicker than the 10w30? By your reasoning 0w should be thinner than a 10w.

Look at the pour point and the css viscosity.

The 5 weight number is measured at 0 degrees F. You picked a point at 40 Celsius

The pour point in that chart is the same for a 5w20 as is for a 0w20, so that doesn't tell me much.

And by my limited understanding of CSS, it's resistance to cranking provided by the oil and its relative thickness. Higher the number, the more resistance to cranking.

0w20 5122
0w30 5372
0w40 6022

All at the same temp, -35*C. So what that tells me (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that it takes more "power" for lack of better term to start the engine with a 0w40 than a 0w20 because the oil is thicker thus providing more resistance. But they are all 0w so wouldn't they all be just as thick and thus provide the same cranking resistance?

We don't care about pour points unless you live in the arctic. As you can see from the MSDS this particular 10w30 and 5w20 are all intents indistingishable at the cold end of the spectrum. The 'w' notation is just a short-hand/guide, it doesn't actually mean anything quantitative.

And yes, we dont' care about CCP at -35C either. Most people see 20F at worst (except some of you mid-staters who might see single digit negatives). If you call Minot ND your home, then sure use a engine block heater and some 0w. For the rest of us a 5w family of oils is just fine. If you're below the Mason-Dixon then there's a pretty decent chance you can run any of the 10w families unless you're in Kansas or something.

Like I said earlier there is a range for each spec and there is some overlap.

Please note that vehicle requirements may vary so consult your car’s handbook for the correct viscosity grade.

So seems like yall are hung up on the ever rolling debate of oil, haha. I was gonna go with Valvoline high mileage 10w-30 since according to some forums and oil experts, 10w-30 did the best with shearing and other factors. Obviously the brand does in fact matter, but Valvoline is doing about $16/5qt and for an entire oil change with an 820F-S filter, $27 total.

Im no oil expert by any means. So with 5w-50 being thicker than 10w-30, how big is the difference in the viscosity of the two?

A lower first number is ALWAYS better, no matter the temperature. The great majority of engine wear occurs at start up, so it's only common sense that you want the lightest possible oil when cold so it starts lubricating properly quicker. That's why the majority of automakers are switching to 0w/xx. There's zero drawback. So I'd get a 0w30 or 5w30, which is more popular than 10w30. Nobody specs 10w30 anymore. Good luck.

It’s a fools errand to use a winter weight (W) that’s higher than what is specified.

OP, stick with 5W or 0W. Never go higher on an overhead cam bearing-less motor. The Coyote has bearing-less cams, the cam journals are aluminum.

5w means very little without the 2nd number. You have to look at the whole spec, not just one number. For example, 5w20 is going to be thinner at cold startup than a 0w30.

OP in this instance you will be fine with a 10w30, especially in a hot climate like yours that won't see much if any freezing temps. A 10w30 is still thinner at cold startup than a 5w50 which is a common and popular oil in the Coyote.
I know all of that, and was talking simply 5w-30 vs 10w-30. The concept of running 10w in these cars because 5w is hard to find, just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I personally run Penn Plat 5w-20 and will change once a year (low mileage).
