Hey guys. Changing my oil soon in my 128k mile 2011. Im definitely not running 5w-20 in it and 5w-50 is a bit hard to find near me. Does anyone have any experience with running 10w-30? I live in SC so it’s hot here year-round, and it sees street and strip time with constant abuse.

No, don’t tell me to follow the owner’s manual or Ford said this or that. I don’t care what they said about being economical or cheap.

Stock internals, tr6060, intake manifold and 93 if it matters.

I run 5-40. I like the 5w due to the overhead cams, the 40 weight for severe service.

yeah. I really can’t find 5w-40 or 5w-50 anywhere near me. Hell, even Motorcraft 5w-50 is $22/qt. It seems that local places DO have 10w-30

I'd prefer the 5w, I mean you can get it online, but I see no reason 10w-30 would be an issue.

Amazon is pretty reasonable for 5w50 if you buy it by the case.

Yeah, I wouldnt be surprised. But its been like 3x as long as it should’ve gotten an oil change, so. Wanting to do it today

5w means very little without the 2nd number. You have to look at the whole spec, not just one number. For example, 5w20 is going to be thinner at cold startup than a 0w30.

OP in this instance you will be fine with a 10w30, especially in a hot climate like yours that won't see much if any freezing temps. A 10w30 is still thinner at cold startup than a 5w50 which is a common and popular oil in the Coyote.

If the 10w-30 could meet the 5w spec it would get labeled as a 5w-30.

There's no such thing as 5w spec. Don't get hung up on marketing numbers, but look at the details provided by the manufacturer. There's no viscosity standard or breakpoints that make a certain oil a 5 vs 10 vs any other number. Just like with tires, a 285 or 275 means little in terms of actual width.

Just look at the MSDS for all the candidates. 10w30 is just fine down to 20F winter.
Unless you don't drive your car, there's nothing wrong with 5w30 in the colder months and swapping to 10w40 for summer.

here is some overlap in grades but the 5w means the cold viscosity the second number is the hot viscosity. The smaller the number the thinner the oil at the rated temp
That's true when you compare a similar oil, for example a w40. The 0w40 will thinner than a 5w40 which will be thinner than a 10w40 which will be thinner than a 15w40 and so on.

When you start crossing grades, it's not as simple. As mentioned before, your 5w40 will be thicker at cold startup than a 10w30 even though yours is a "5w" and the other is a "10w".

That's why I mentioned to the OP that his 10w30 will be fine because it's actually thinner than a 5w50 which is commonly and safely run in the Coyote engine.
