Nevermind the radar. How are you getting 23 MPG?
Lol. Note the mileage. This was right after filling up, highway travel, pre-tune, pre-long tubes.

I average 19.2 now.

IMHO, radar detectors are really just "ticket detectors" if that thing goes off, it's ticket time. If a cop pulls you over & sees your detector, personally...you're getting a ticket. But anyway...I'm not sure if anybody has used this app called "Waze". I've used it on several of my last trips & it's phenomenal!! Just other folks around on the same app reporting what they see. Went to Fort Worth recently and it gave me "heads up" on every speed trap a 1/2 mile before I got to it. Really cool once you get to used to it!!

I've heard only certain radars work best in california, any truth to that?

ZERO - I do a lot of road trips each year. 3 or 4 600+ milers and 1 2,500 miler every year (various cars).

I am usually one of the fastest cars, but there is always a rabbit you can follow. Then avoid these simple rules and you should be pretty good.

#1 - Never speed over a blind hill if you can't see a car in front of you.
#2 - Never speed around a blind curve if you can't see a car in front of you.
#3 - Check every overpass and entrance ramp as you approach.
#4 - Watch for brake lights, brake lights, brake lights. Even people going the speed limit will brake check if the see a cop. You see em, slow down.

#5 is the most important. STAY OUT OF THE LEFT LANE. Cops have their radar trained on the left lane because thats where the idiots hang out. Keep right, except to pass. Being in the center or right lane can give you a fraction of a second to try and scrub of speed if surprised by a cop. Especially since lazer is so dependent on line of sight.
This x1000
AND... Waze on my LTE Samsung Tablet!

A radar detector is a good situational awareness tool but if you are relying on it to prevent tickets you've already failed. Keeping your eyes focused on the road, knowing your surroundings and paying attention to what's going on around you will prevent more tickets than any piece of gadgetry.

With that being said, my proof of concept is in two cases. One was in Chicago where many cops have LIDAR. My detector did nothing for that as it's instant on and then they got ya. No ticket because I was nice to the officer and didn't give him any more reasons to cite me. The second instance was in Arkansas on a winding mountain road and my music was louder than my detector so I missed the opportunity to slow down.

In the 7 years since my detector was stolen out of my car I've not received one ticket...and I'm almost always doing 7-10 over.

I'm in the market for a radar detector for the first time but there are so many to choose from. The Passport 9500ix looks good, but I'm hearing good things about the Valentine V1. Which do you swear on?
I swear on driving no more than 9 over on hwy and none over in city.

I had an expensive radar back in the day... but the police officer got a jump on me on a country road. Never used one again.

Plus, speed does kill. :tsk:

The in car camera works for me plus the PP turns so many RPMS on highway I'm fine going the speed limit or under. I save the hard driving for a track, I know it's fast, no reason to show it. Again all the roads around here are 70 to 75 mph.

Yea im wondering arent all these people with the valentines, etc getting nailed with laser at this point?

I'm pretty close to buying the Bel Sti-R Plus with Laser Shifter Pros in the front to avoid this issue

I have 4 vehicles and each has a hardwired in radar detector. I have used nothing but Whistler detectors since I got my first one in the mid 70's and have never been bagged by radar since having a detector. I typically replace them every 5-7 yesrs.

In my area the only cops that use laser are the state police on the highways where it is pretty easy to see them and I don't typically drive fast enough on the highway to draw attention.

FWIW, a couple friends of mine that are cops won't use laser. They say it's a pain to use because it requires total attention of the traffic and they can write all the tickets they want using radar pointed down the road with an alarm set.

I can't remember the last time I actually saw an X band radar gun being used by the police and there seems to be more and more X band false alarms so I am looking to replace my current batch with ones that X band can be shut off and use GPS to remember the locations of other false alarms. I have been considering something from Escort at least for the Mustang. Valentine is out because every test I have read is that the false more than other top of the line detectors.
