I'm using a GoPro Hero 11 in the windshield for the track, another GoPro Hero 11, but this time the mini version, for the dash and a old iPhone 7 for the driver and passenger.

The issue I'm facing is that the 2x GoPros overheat after ~20min and naturally stop working.

What are you guys using?

My go to has been to throw my GoPro in the cooler with my lunch and ice packs. But honestly I don't think there is another option out there like the GoPro.

There is a reason GoPro stock is as low as it's ever been, and the company is likely on the verge of bankruptcy....

GoPro sux.

I also use my cel phone mounted to my windshield for my timing app and I splice in graphics onto either phone or GoPro footage depending on which method crapped out lol.

I’ve been toying with getting a catalyst but I’m not sure if I can record a whole session(s) with it.

I have 3-cam Viofo dashcam that lives permanently in my car. I attached the interior camera up high in the passenger corner rear screen and aimed at my dash. This allows me to review speed, gear, rpm, and myself. Although I wish it was zoomed in more. I also put on a Polarized filter (actually all 3 have them).

I am also running a Catalyst. I found I get at least a couple weekends before it complains about storage space.

I don't have car data logging, but I think if I went that route then I would be getting too serious and actually have less fun with HPDE.

I've used a GP Hero 8 for the last 4 years without overheating issue. One thing that may be causing overheating is mounting in the windshield. Its in direct sunlight. I initially used a helmet mount but have moved it to the roll bar. What settings are you using? I would imagine that recording in 4k would cause more heat than 1080. I dont know that for fact but just educated guess.

Insta360 is another popular camera.

Yeah that's part of it. I did buy one of those white rubbery cases to help reduce the amount of heat the camera collects. I'm also running it on external power with an empty battery bay (no battery and no latch) to help dissipate heat.

What settings are you using?
4k, 60 fps, everything else if off (hypersmooth, etc). Like I said, I am using an external power supply and mic (that goes all the way to the back, next the exhaust tips). Then I combine that audio track with the one from my mini GoPro that captures cabin motor noise, see:

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm allowed to have any external mounted camera on the car tbh...

Insta360 is the same as a GoPro just different brand. Doesn’t have to be external. I think it being mounted in the windshield is causing it to overheat more. Try a helmet mount or more inside the cabin.

You must have some wack settings.
I use a gopro 11 and a viofo a229 pro 3ch but the batteries for GoPro last about 40-45 min and I can go through all 5 batteries I have and never have the camera overheat. Sure it gets hotter than when it's turned off. But it'll never overheat. I also use it for my bike in blistering temps. Never had it overheat. I run pretty decent setting not the highest fps but pretty high so I am do slowmo. I'd be curious as to your settings. And if you are running a case, cage or anything similar around it.

Insta360 is similar but their stability is nowhere near as good as GoPro for bouncy driving and the likes. A track should be pretty smooth so you can get away with it. Resolution is also a drawback on certain models.

4k, 60 fps, everything else if off (hypersmooth, etc)., mediamod, external power and no battery inside. I'll try without the media mod, battery and battery latch to see if it makes a difference. I'll also redirect one vent to blow air onto it

I am using the phone with the TrackAddict application, hooked up with the car via bluetooth ODB2 adapter. It records as good as your phone is capable of and on export one can add various details on the overlay. I used to run the Garmin Mini 2 at the back and Garmin Dashcam 65W front, but they don't provide as good quality as the phone camera, neither add capability for detailed overlay.

Here's my best lap for 2025 on our local track which has just been updated, not really finished yet, but driveable. The video is exported using free version of the Race Render app, so the sound and video have been degraded from the original. Still works good enough for me...

Alr, when I get home from work I'll check my setting and see whats different. I have also heard some models have defects so it's entirely possible your camera is defective but let me check my settings and see if that helps, I also use the endure battery with the white plastic top and bottom

I do the same Phone/TrackAddict combo and support it with video from 2 goPro's (when they don't crap out). Usually 1 on the splitter, side of vehicle, or mounted on helmet and the other rear mounted.

The inconsistency is ridiculous though. Sometimes it'll start recording mid session, sometimes it'll just stop recording. The starting mid-session really irritates the $#!+ outta me.

What bluetooth OBD2 adapter are you using? I would like to get a better GPS antenna because the 1Hz is clearly not cutting it anymore. Is there

Heres an old PB video from Sonoma. I've bettered my time since then but dealing with recording issues. :cwl:

Before I went to RaceCapture, I used SkyPro XGPS160. Worked flawlessly with GoPro, iPhone, OBD BT and Trackaddict

Ooohhh, that view looks scary, I am expecting my nose to get rubbed on the asphalt any moment! That's pretty bold view angle.
The OBD, I am using one of the cheapest I found on Amazon - Veepeak brand. It works well so far. I thought of purchasing external Bluetooth GPS, but honestly, I'd prefer buying a dedicated logger like Racebox or Draggy or similar for the price. The OBD gives better detail on current gear and rpm, throttle and break values, speed and g-forces come from the phone.
I would test a GoPro, but they seem to get worse since Hero 8 onwards, a lot of people complain about overheating and stuff, but the Garmin dash cam has no such issues. Problem with Garmin is they have different purpose - more storage and incident detection than quality.
