Can confirm VA no radar detectors.

But people still stealth mount theM in their cars, where they can't be seen inside or out. Shops around here specialize in hiding detectors.
I am interested can you tell me more?

I live in a state where RDs are illegal. I'm looking for a remote mount solution that defeats detector detectors. Some added insurance along with Wazes.

thx!

I have never owned a radar, so please bear with me and my question here… I wonder why no one mounts/places a radar on a center dash/dashboard/console —the section above center AC vents and gauges… There is a nice flat surface almost begging to have something installed there. Again, I am coming from Jeep Wrangler’s world, and this would be the location I would like to see my radar placed. What am I missing here?

All radar detectors have a horn antenna facing towards the front of the car and most (to my knowledge) have a second horn antenna facing the back. If the detector were to be placed on the dashboard then its view of the rear of the car would be blocked to a large extent by the driver/passenger and seats.

Well, part of the reason is the detector would be right where anyone can see it. I have mine hidden in an edc pouch attached to my visor with wire tucked under the headliner and a remote display. You won't see it unless you really look for it.

It's all about height. All a radar detector is, is an antenna. Generally speaking, the higher any antenna is the better it will receive signals. Since most radar/ laser guns are line of sight the higher you can get the receiver/antenna the more likely you are to get early warnings.
Mounting on the dash will work, heck, there are (or were at least) that mount behind the grill. But that extra 12" to 18" of height can make a difference in how soon it receives a signal.

BTW I am considering a Uniden R7 and need advice from current RD owners where the ideal location would be, the options being -
  • Under the mirror using a blendmount type of bracket
  • between the rear-view mirror and head liner
  • clipped to the visor
  • On the dashboard or in the middle of the windshield with a concealed mute button somewhere on the steering column
What I am apprehensive about is if the visor/under mirror mount will be too close to my eyes/head. Looking at other examples in rdforum/google image search is not very helpful as the images seem to be from bigger cars/pickups where there is much more space than the mustang.

Blendmount and mirror tap. Go for the R8 if you can. I had both. R8 is better.

Dude made this post 4.5 years ago before the R8 was even on the market, I'm sure he's found something by now.

I have my R4 mounted to the left and above the left side of the mirror. When new windshield goes in with 85% tint I'll get a dark band as well so it's invisible.

Perfect location in my line of sight and instant touch if needed. Do have to move the mirror down and twist to take it out when not on highway.

I have my U1000+ cam mounted same on the right side of mirror and it's barely visible.

Sorry for the necro, but thought I'd throw in my own two cents & share what I've done. Took inspiration from thunderstrike's earlier post, and designed my own mount for the Valentine V1 Gen 2.

I am easily one of the biggest suction cup haters in the world out there, so I made my own attachment/adapter to clip onto Valentine V1 Gen 2's mount. Can't confirm whether it'll work on Gen 1's (mount is a different P/N). It's currently secured with 3M Command Strips, but I recommend something stronger, e.g., Dual Lock.

I have the mirror tap on the way, so it's using the cigarette lighter at the moment. I have the 3D CAD files available here for anyone to modify & 3D print at their leisure: https://www.printables.com/model/1581041-valentine-v1-gen-2-windshield-adapter-mount-s550-m

Remember to use ASA or other high temperature filament/resin for vehicle interiors!

Yep, definitely a necro thread. But I did just install my Escort Max 360 MKII, Blend mount to the mirror. It fits nicely...

Doesn't that location put the detector so high that the V1G2's rear-facing antenna is blocked?

I'm not sure, we'll find out. From that level, it does see out of the rear window, but I'm sure it loses out some level of vertical sensitivity. But I did get some detections from the rear.
