So I originally brought my GT350 to my local dealer (Kings Ford) back in October to get an oil change but they didn't have the filter in stock. I complained because I explained to my service advisor that I left them a few messages to get back to me regarding the shortage because I wanted to make sure they had the filter before I wasted my time. They never got back to me so I didn't find out until I brought the car in.

Well yesterday I brought the car back and got my oil changed because I was sick of waiting. They put in the K&N filter and the Amsoil that I supplied. I actually asked my service advisor if the filter would void the warranty and he said no. This is also the same service advisor that advised me back in October not to use an aftermarket filter. That was before he realized the extent of the backorder.
If you don’t get that statement in writing, I wouldn’t bet on it.
Iā€˜m learning more everyday how dealerships operate….it’s not pretty. I’ve been in the industry for almost 15 years.

@BuckeyeGT350 He is correct. An aftermarket filter will not void your warranty. One could argue you're already using Amsoil oil; you don't seem to be worried about that voiding your warranty? (I’m being slightly facetious). People are scared of their own shadows over the warranty thing. This whole filter topic is out of control when Amsoil and K&N are readily available. I’ll run an Amsoil filter looooonnnggg before I run a 2062. @Hanavarian is correct.

Then why would a dealership send people away when they want their oil changed?

People can use whatever filter they want, but if things go bad, they will point to the filter. The manual is very specific that you have to use the dealer supplied oil filter or engine damage may occur. When Ford is looking at a 20K engine replacement, and someone used a non approved filter, that someone would be on thin ice.

Below is a copy of the oil filter spec for the '18 GT350. It looks to me that they were very specific. If you deviate from that specification, be prepared to own it.

note: The above filter has been updated to the FL2087, but the language is still the same. If you use an aftermarket oil filter, and engine damage occurs, it will be an uphill fight. This is not intended to be an amsoil vs motorcraft debate. Call your dealer and ask if they install aftermarket oil filters due to the shortage. And if you do find one that will, ask them if it will affect engine warranty should there be a problem.

Seems like if this was a no brainer the dealerships would be using the aftermarket filters and charging us all for their overprices oil changes as opposed to turning down the quick and easy buck.

From the regional service rep, not a dealership employee.
Damn. I wish I would have seen that warning before. My fault for not reading the manual.

I guess the search for FL-2087 continues for me. The car is not going to be driven for the next month or two at least so I guess I have time. Once I get my hands on one I'll bring it back for another oil change. I don't think there is a way to just swap out the oil filter and a dealer probably won't go through the trouble/mess. Waste of some good Amsoil, but not worth the risk of keeping the filter in for me.

I also don't think its worth approaching a regional service rep just yet if I can get my hands on a filter and just pay for another oil change. The aggravation continues...

Lol. Its no foul as long as your engine stays intact. When a filter becomes available, just change it out.

If your engine implodes, change the filter to a FL-2087 afterwards, before you take it in for the warranty claim.

Hahahhah…this topic is getting out of control.

*Note - walking across the street may result in getting hit by a car.

@BuckeyeGT350 so running a non Motorcraft filter is the end of the world, but no concerns running non Motorcraft oil? Also, yes, you can change just the filter without changing the oil. Do not waste all that oil.

And here's a real pisser. Ford Parts - added to cart and selected my local dealer - Im guessing the prices are generated from them.. So dealers might have some but they are price gouging...and the manual says you are required to use it or void warranty. This doesn't seem legal.

It’s not legal. We can have a beer together and debate what MAY happen all day long, and debate what would play out if it did happen and we’re still buds…but they absolutely CANNOT legally make that statement. (The manual doesn’t state it will void your warranty. People are reading into it)

I'm willing to bet if you ordered it you would get an email a few hours later saying your order is cancelled because they cannot fulfill it due to parts shortages. I've been down that road before with Fordparts.com and the FL-2087. Granted I ordered filters for $28 and not $135.

You're right about the way that most dealers operate. I worked at a Toyota and a Ford dealership just long enough to learn this. It's bottom line or no line. And I mean every single dime.

For sure!

I actually asked for the old oil filter back so I could examine the metal fragments in it and thought about that. But, the tech wrote that I supplied the oil, filter and specified K&N HP-7037. I'm sure the first thing they would look up are the service records.

Hahahhah…this topic is getting out of control.

Hahahaha I never said this was the end of the world. The manual doesn't say anything about not using dealer supplied oil, but does specifically state that for the oil filter for a reason.

At the end of the day this is not going to stop me from driving the car when the winter is over. Odds are nothing is going to happen. That said, this is still aggravating.
