Hi all, ordered a fl 2087 from lmr and received this.
Looks possibly damaged with a stain too.
Do you think it’s still usable?
Thanks

Looks 100% fine to me. Almost looks like someone grabbed the filter and their finger had a bit of dye on it.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use it, but that’s just me.

Better hurry.... a little bird told me they are discontinuing the steel internal portion of the filter that essentially makes it crushproof.

Stock up. I bought 36 of them at $22 each and have a bunch left over from the shortage.

I am told the steel core will be plastic.

I actually laughed at “I bought 36 of them….. from the shortage.”

Wonder why there was a shortage, lol.

Yup the new version is already on sale as FL-2087-A. Doesn't have the rubber end caps and has a plastic internal mesh.

No, that's not what I said. I just bought 36 of them recently after what I was told. I had some others left over from the shortage. The leftovers were from people who sent me some because I loaned them to get them through a pinch.

You guys are killing me with the spin.....

Oh and 36 filters is only 12 years having 3 cars that need them. I'm keeping these cars for life.

Anyway, OP, make sure they don't send you a FL2087A instead.

So what? My Mercedes has a filter that is exactly like that.
To me it's better, less components made of different materials that could separate, for instance.

And the center made of plastic, what's the big deal? Polymers are more stable than steel... given the right conditions...

The FL 2062 used to be the specified filter for the GT350 and GT500. The plastic center had been documented to crush and cause oil starvation which caused engine failure.

So, yea, no big deal.....

Are you trolling?

MB and BMW have used cartridge filters for years - my 1980's Benz's had them. But that's irrelevant. We're discussing GT350's and GT500's which have lubrication systems that are very different than a regular family car. They move a lot of high-viscosity oil very fast. If the filter core isn't strong enough, the filter material can collapse into a wad and block the oil flow.

When Ford switched the GT350 from a spin-on filter to a cartridge filter in 2017, the rate of engine failures went up. The original cartridge filter, the FL-2062, was "borrowed" from the Ecoboost product line, and would have been similar to the MB and BMW filters. It had a plastic core. Ford de-certified that filter for the GT350 in 2018, replacing it with the steel-core FL-2087. Engine failures declined. The GT500 had the FL-2087 as the specified filter from the beginning.

So, given history, where Ford Performance qualifies an oil filter for production use like the spin-on FL-2069ST for the early GT350's and the FL-2087 for late GT350's and the GT500, we see reliable engines that don't fail often. When Ford's supply chain experts replace costly FP-spec parts with low cost parts, problems seem to emerge.

The 2015-2016 GT350s used a spin on oil filter arrangement which was eventually replaced with a cartridge style element because the filters were vibrating loose during operation (if not torqued properly). The original cartridge style replacement was FL-2062A, a shared part with 2.7 ecoboost and other motors; it has a plastic cage on the inside, rubber end caps, and a yellow filter media. This was clearly a stop-gap solution for Ford. I have seen at least two reports online of the FL-2062A failing (e.g., collapsing) when in use in the 5.2 engine. For the 2019 model year the FL-2062A was replaced with a bespoke FL-2087 filter that was designed and deployed for 5.2L Voodoo and Predator applications. It has a steel inner mesh and rubber end caps. Now, the FL-2087 has been replaced with the FL-2087A, which again has a plastic inner mesh but this time with no end caps. Why would Ford switch to this design? We can only guess. My guess is cost savings.

Actually, very early GT500s had the 2062 and that caused engine failures. Are you sure about the 2018 date?
It's in the Owner's Supplements - MY2017 says FL2069ST, MY2018 says FL2062 and MY2019 says FL2087. That puts the FL2087 change-over at the start of MY 2019 production in (I think it's April) 2018. I'd always assumed that the development of the Predator engine turned up the problems with the FL2062 (perhaps during the arctic testing) and that an improved filter, the FL2087, was developed to pass those tests and it was sent along to the GT350 once it was qualified for the GT500. Maybe not, eh?

UPDATE: Just checked the 2020 GT500 Owner's Supplement and it spec's the FL2087. Predator failures from FL2062's were probably the result of a dealer (or other place) service tech sticking in a "GT350" filter, the FL2062, because they figured it would work and nobody would ever know...
