Obviously there are more than one thing that can make an engine noisy - loose rod or main bearings, excessive piston clearance, too much rod side clearance, too much crank end play, bad lifter(s), broken valve spring, faulty cam chain tensioner, etc.. Some of those problems will put metal in the oil, some of them won't. The BBQ tick certainly is random while at idle. If it was a constant perfectly timed ticking with RPM, then it's something else.
Tech on FB said the only other cause of ticking he has seen ith the 18's was due to the pressure plate, who knows could be more reasons too.

Holy shit I just checked my catch can with a flashlight and wow... :

ZJJ8MCd.webp

This is not good. Car is at the dealer, I took the can off before bringing it there so they couldnt try to blame it somehow.. Looked at the can oil after I got back.. I wonder if I should have left it on.

This is with only 700 miles on the oil. I changed out the break in oil at 1175 miles this was at 1850. Drained the can like at like 1600 miles few days ago too but didnt check for metal.
Just tell em you know there is metal in the oil, you pulled a small sample and saw it yourself, wouldn't tell them about the can.

You probably are very correct
Would the vapors can carry metal particulate? Just curious
It's not just vapors, I am certain at some point in time when you are driving at WOT oil is getting blown threw that, I literally drove around the block maybe 2-3 miles tops came home and had 2 teaspoons in my can.

If you search about "glitter" or metal in catch cans you may find it's pretty common (often said to be from the filter element in the can). Allot of responses also seem to say it's difficult for metal to come through the PVC system, so unlikely.... I did allot of reading after seeing the sparkly badness first hand...I'm not the expert but if the internet in general is to believed this isn't the same thing as seeing it in your oil filter or oil drained from the oil pan.
Mine looked like his, with a few slightly larger junks.

Bigger pieces were more shiny, almost like an aluminum.

If you got that much oil in 2-3 miles, there must be some crazy ring blow-by going on. I get maybe 3/4 oz (which is ~4 teaspoons worth) of oil in my UPR catch-can in 1000 miles.

I agree that that seems excessive 2 teaspoons in 2-3 miles, especially if you werent WOT the entire time. My cts-v caught a ton of oil in its can but it ran great and had 93k miles at 14 psi of boost, but it would really catch like 14 oz per 5k miles. My mustang seems to catch much less maybe have caught 1.5 oz in around 2k miles

I had my auto in sport mode instead of D and punched it every chance I got. I drove in the next day maybe 50 miles round trip in drive mode and didn't see any additional oil.

I drive my GT pretty hard at times too ... but still only get about 3/4 oz in 1000 miles.

I think the question is, for those of us who drive daily and spirited on occasion... do we really need a catch can?
We do not, already has port side injectors to keep things clean, if it was straight DI only I would say yes.

I guess the real question is why some of forum members have metal in cans.

And those who do not have cans, particles bypass air filter and fly right into cylinders. That is not going to make them live longer.

Is it specific to 18+ or 15-17 are also affected?

Your late to the party, there were no shavings the prior 4-5 times we emptied them.

Understanstable, only asking because when I received my gen 1 JLT Catch Can it had metal flaking off the threads and at the time I remember seeing someone post about “cleaning your catch can” beacause of manufacturing remnants. When I upgraded to my UPR Catch Can I cleaned a small amount of fine flake off the threads but assumed I’d find some in the Can at some point in the future.
