It’s 3 for the top coat application, generally the sealer isn’t counted.

Actually its 4 layers according to my dealership auto body and my personal auto body shop I get my work done at.

Found another big rock chip today when I washed the car. At this point I think I may just remove all the paint and drive a primer car like the high school days. Get tagged by a rock and just rattle can some more primer on the car.

Partial ppf on known impact areas is a cost effective option.

That was the same thing I heard about Ruby Red Metallic when I had my 2016 GT. It apparently has a pigment in the clear coat that makes it difficult to match.
Actually the pigment is in the 2nd color coat. The 3rd coat is the clearcoat.

I completely missed the PPF train and it's my own damn fault. At this point I'll budget an entire new paint job with PPF. I'm also holding out for Keaton's Batmobile "shield" technology when parked. Really though, latest chip is on the drivers door so I'll see it every time I open the door, ugh! About to Dr olorchip it now.

First time I took incoming rocks from a gravel truck it made me sick... After I got over it I used some touch up paint and it looks good if you don't look too closely. Now I just drive and and enjoy it knowing it's going to get more chips as I drive and track it. And yes, the paint is really thin.

Odds are they have this color formulated for a 2-stage basecoat/ clearcoat match in the touchups.

End result of a rock breaking my windshield. And my insurance company said fuq it, not only replace the windshield with a factory Ford unit, but repaint the whole frontend for other minor nicks. $100 deductible, no impact on my insurance or D/L. I tossed them 50 bucks to fix the holes where the front plate was attached.

The paint on these S550's sucks, it is too fragile... if it's looked at sideways it chips...

My 94 Cobra w/original paint has less chips on it in 27 years of highway driving than my 2018...
The paint on my '20 GT varies between 5.7 to 6.9 mils in thickness. Interesting how at different places on the same panel, it varies by about .5 mils or more. On the other hand, my home appliances have paint thicknesses from 1.4 mils to 2.2 mils, so I guess the paint on the car is better (then again appliances usually don't get environmental exposures like the car does).

I agree. Ditto w/my (recently sold) '98 GT & (about to be traded in) 2005 Expedition as compared to my 2019 GT. I have been told that the (possible) reason for the S550 taking such a beating is that it is the most aero of any previous Mustang. And that, due to the closer proximity of the air flow over the entire body, more crap gets dropped onto the paint. An interesting theory, for sure. To be honest, I was much more pissed w/a slave cylinder failure @ 25k+ miles ... in Flagstaff (AZ)!!! Personally, I don't lose a lot of sleep over the paint as it's just the price I pay for driving it ... a lot. This upcoming Thanksgiving will mark my 3rd year of ownership & I have just passed 40k miles thru 26 states & Canada. :like:
