I’ve been looking at a 23 Mach1 at our local Ford dealer. I will be turning 64 soon and I am going to get a Mustang to enjoy during retirement. We have had Mustangs in the past. They were 09’s. My question after doing research on the Mach 1 is if this is too much car for a guy that probably will never even do a burnout let alone ever get it on a track? I’m thinking just a GT would be plenty. But this particular car is really in good shape.
Am I overthinking this? Any opinions are appreciated.

You got me by 10 years but were otherwise similar. I have no regrets on going with the M1. I wasn’t going to buy a GT regardless. Looked at several C8 but the M1 checked enough of the boxes and is distinct enough from the crowd. You may surprise yourself. The power is addicting and every now and then I get an urge to go to Mexico I never thought I would have.

I'll play the GTs advocate for this one. I would normally recommend the Mach 1 but since it sounds like you just want a cruiser I would like to recommend the 401A GT with no Track Pack. I call it the Grandpa package. The suspension is soft for cruising, the power is plenty, the A10 with paddles is sweet, the 3.15s are really well mannered, the stereo is a nice bump over stock, and you'll save like $10k. The Mach is going to be way stiffer which you really don't need in a non track cruiser.

I’m older than you are and say go for it and I guarantee you won’t have any regrets. I did go to the A10 just to get a break from my other manual and still smile every time I drive my Mach 1. It only goes as fast as you want it to and is quite docile the rest of the time like when I’m with my co-pilot who thinks I drive like an idiot. To use a quote from a friend…if not now, when?

I'm currently 69 and ordered my Mach 1 when I was 66, and picked it up when I was 67 and a month before I retired. Zero regrets! As @Prodigal mentioned, I was thinking hard about a C8, but the Mach 1 HP with the manual trans did it for me. I waited a year for the Mach to be built and the wait was worth it. I drive the Mach in a similar fashion as you describe, but I guess I am saving it for the next guy.

It's kinda nice to have more car than you will use... Correction: Its very nice to have more car than you will use. Someone recently asked me if I regretted buying my M1. I told them that if my wife saw the way I looked at my M1 she'd probably divorce me. They are fun cars that look great.

I'm 64, love love love my Mach 1. I don't push it to the limits but it is a brilliant car. I'm certain the GT is a great car as well. Being an automatic takes out one of the biggest pluses of a Mach one as that is the 3160 Tremec. I'm sure you will enjoy either car, but there is absolutely nothing to fear in a Mach 1. With the magnetic ride control it drives like a dream but can stiffen up if you want to get sporty. (and I do) If money isn't an issue, I'd say buy the best condition car, GT or Mach 1, you can get your hands on.

I would go with a brand new GT and get all the performance options and the warranty to go with it. Plus it would be a brand new car and you can brake it in the way you want to. With a used car, you can never know how the car was treated during the break in period. It might look good but that doesn't guarantee it was broken in properly. You can always add parts to bring it close to a M1 if that's a big consideration.

Go for the Mach! GT or Mach, you’re never going to use its full capabilities on street (unless you want to go to jail LOL). The Mach is a great car, if it’s rare for one to turn up in your area, I’d jump on it.

The Mach is a fantastic car. I would love to have one for sure. BUT, I also love my car as well. GT Premium Performance Pack, 10 speed, magneride car. It is very close to a non HP Mach in the performance department, not quite as "special" though. I don't regret it at all, I am in the same boat, it is more car than I need for sure...

I use the same principle as I had with my sport bikes. I want a vehicle with more capabilities than I dare to use. I never used all their power (I'm a bit conservative). The bikes were far more nimble than I'd ever push (so they could, and did, get me out of oops situations). Likewise the brakes were awesome, (again they could, and did, save me in oops situations).

So at my age (71) I thoroughly enjoy a nimble car that has great stopping power should I have fractional "senior moments". And with the power (which I'll never use) I enjoy a rumble, nostalgic of my teen days with a big block.

Go for it. Although I own both the M1 is so much more fun to drive. Enjoy your labors and do it.
