My question after doing research on the Mach 1 is if this is too much car for a guy that probably will never even do a burnout let alone ever get it on a track?
Too much in what way? Are you wondering if it's worth paying M1 premium over a GT for things that are track oriented and you'll never use? Folks drive Porsche Turbos daily and they're too much for the road (so is a GT) but they do it because they want to.

If the price is right and your budget allows it there are things about the M1 not including track based stuff that make it special. If it's a retirement thing don't ignore what just makes you feel good.

OP, you said it yourself: it would be "unique" to your area.

I'm 67. Had seven Mustangs. GTs, Mach 1s, a GT350, 2 automatics, 5 manuals. Recent Mach 1 is my favorite of them all. (Had only my '76 Lancia beta Scorpion had modern electronics.😿)

For your purposes, the GT and the Mach 1 would be about the same. So it comes down to whether you want to drive around in a unique Mustang. (Hint: if you'd enjoy uniqueness at all, get the Mach 1.)

I’ve been looking at a 23 Mach1 at our local Ford dealer. I will be turning 64 soon and I am going to get a Mustang to enjoy during retirement. We have had Mustangs in the past. They were 09’s. My question after doing research on the Mach 1 is if this is too much car for a guy that probably will never even do a burnout let alone ever get it on a track? I’m thinking just a GT would be plenty. But this particular car is really in good shape.
Am I overthinking this? Any opinions are appreciated.
I say if you like it jump on it. No need to be apprehensive about it's capabilities. I am 73 My Mach is a 21. Ordered it new (M1545). I don't drive it like a maniac. Don't want to be that burnout gone bad guy after cars and coffee. I will admit it does awesome burnouts. As others have said it only goes as fast as you tell it to, but knowing what is available beyond that, is part of the fun. In reality there is only about 20 HP difference Mach to GT. Unless you are full throttle a lot, like at the track, you really wont know the difference.

Good luck with your purchase. Also I can attest to retirement being awesome.

64 and love my Mach! Magnaride allows for a very comfy ride in normal mode. Active exhaust allows for a quiet ride so you can hear the tunes. If you like that sort of thing 🤣. I drive in sport mode with the exhaust in track mode 99% of the time. The car is like a time machine, I feel 20 years younger every time I drive it. Sure GT's are nice vehicles, park next to one with your Mach 1. You'll get more attention. This car is a thrill to drive!

Get the Mach 1. If it's a HP with original Sport Cup 2 tires, replace them with PS4's or Continental Extreme Contact Spot 2's, get an alignment, and enjoy it. If it's a standard Mach 1, just enjoy it.

I couldn't agree more.

Windows down, radio up, (60s on 6), rowing through the gears, that Coyote is growling, driving through the country side. Transforms this old guy (73) back to 1969. And like they say on those adds, "she likes it too"

OP, I started to multi-quote some of these replies and respond but I’ll cut right to the chase instead: if you can afford it, get the Mach 1. It’s special and makes you feel special too, even if you never use all itā€˜s capabilities.

There is nothing about the Mach that makes it ā€œtoo much carā€. I have 2 GTs and 2 Mach 1s ranging from 460 hp up to 486 hp, with rear ends from 3.15 to 3.73. If you could drive ā€˜em blindfolded (on the street anyway) you’d be hard pressed to tell which was which. On the track, maybe but I wouldn’t bet. Any of mine will get away from you if disrespected, but none will when driven reasonably. So don’t let that worry you.

As far as the post claiming the Mach 1 ride was stiffer than the GT, umm, not so much at all. I’m 75, have one new knee and need another one. I have an older hip replacement and my back MRI has literally caused surgeons to gasp when they first see it. I will tell you that both of these cars ride great and are very comfortable. The M1 would likely ride firmer if not for the Magneride but that saves the day. It handles flatter and tighter than the GT but in no way rides worse. Don’t give that a thought.

Speaking of the GT, it is a very capable car and by no means a slouch In the corners. But I’d bet the vast majority of street drivers would never push the GT hard enough to miss the M1’s superior abilities. I know I said get the Mach 1 but if the GT suits you better, no worries. It’s a great car.

I will tell you one thing affecting me that may or may not be a problem for you: personality metamorphosis. I lean on all my Mustangs pretty hard (again, street only) but when I’m driving a Mach I tend to get a little Billy Bad-Azz from time to time, especially in my manual. I roll AVE in track mode only so that’s contributory I guess. Not good but I’m trying to do better.

Good luck and I know you’ll enjoy your choice!

100% you will love the Mach 1. Fantastic all around car. Its my daily with full HP parts, I don't track it. Perfect daily driver or cruiser. Flip it to sport+, Track exhaust and it transforms the car. My only complaint is I can't mod it much because it does it all so good stock :like: Also looks fantastic.

At 65 I just got a GT PP2 (used) and had a Mach 1 last year. Both 6 speeds. Both great driving cars. AS stated above of the M1 is an HP then your probably going to change tires. Neither car is a bad choice. It would be price dependent on which one I would choose probably.

As long as price doesn't bother you remember Better to have more then you need then latter on have less then you want, thinking I should have gotten the other. You only live once.

I'll be 79 in August and I'm driving a 2017 GT Performance Pack with Roush Phase 2 supercharger and lots of other mods. It's been my daily driver for the past seven years. Buy the Mach 1. You won't regret it. Here's a picture of mine.
