I changed mine today at 1000 miles with Amsoil Signature 5W-20 and was suppressed that the original oil filter was not a Motorcraft FL500 S, the filter that was on it was shorter , looked like a purilator, any one notice this?

I went to the Ford dealer "Fast Lane" last week to have my first change done @ 2500 miles. The writer said I needed to wait till 3500 miles to "let the break in oil coat the seals". I laughed and said ok and left...

I will be going full syn on the first change. Was thinking Amsoil but damn..$$$

Just did my first yesterday at ~2000 miles, Mobil 1 5W-30 and filter. I'll change again at 5000 and then every 5000 thereafter.

More of a mess tending to the filter than I expected, even with a formable funnel thingy. :frusty: Oh well, I know what to expect now.

Most times factory fill oil has moly in it to accelerate break in. Changing too early can slow down break-in process.
I think I am gonna change mine at 4000 miles but it's gonna be unlikely since I own two cars.

i guess if you're in canada its 7.6 liters, but if you're here in the good ole, US of A, it's 8 quarts bud.
1 liter = 1.056 quarts
7.6 liters = 8.02 quarts

end of class

Just did my first change at 1400 miles with Mobil 1 5w20 and Motorcraft filter. I used the filter model specified by Ford even though there's another Ford filter (can't recall the part number now but was used by Ford in higher spec Mustangs and fits this model) that seems might work better, just to avoid potential warranty issues and the one specified should be fine. Glad I did the oil change now instead of waiting until 5k like I was considering, because the oil drain plug was almost lose, took maybe 2 or 3 pounds of force if that to loosen the drain plug. Oil filter was thankfully easy (but not too easy) to loosen as well--not too loose and not overtightened. I installed a Fumoto drain valve in place of the drain plug for easier future oil changes as I've been doing for my last couple of cars. The Ford drain plug did not have any washer, which was unexpected--don't know if that's normal for this model but it'd be unusual in my experience with past cars I've owned.

This is Coyote #3 for me. The following formula worked perfectly well for DD use on #1 and #2:
  • Don't do an early change of the factory fill.
  • Change every 7,500 miles or when the oil life monitor says so, whichever comes first.
  • Stick with Motorcraft 5W-20 semi-synthetic and the Motorcraft filter.
I never got the infamous Coyote tick or had any oil consumption problems with this plan. In particular, my '13 saw heavy use, had 46K on the clock when traded, and still ran like a brand new car.

One thing I do recommend is keeping an eye on the dipstick before that first change and topping off as needed. I have experienced some consumption during the first 2,500 miles with these engines.
I now have results from 2 oil analysis checks, with the first change at about 7500 miles and the other at just over 15000 miles. My car is daily driven on the street, with the occasional spirited run up the gears.

The results show that following the Ford maintenance recommendation is ok for normal driving conditions. Obviously if I drove the car differently, other maintenance practices would apply. In summary, I did the same as the quoted poster.

I change when the car tells me to. I figure ford wants my maintenance money and does not want to foot the bill for warranty work, so their hedge is very much on the safe side. Nothing scientific here....just my logic.

I am at 8% today....I just need to decide synthetic or semi....

Every oil analysis I seen so far tell me that changing the oil at 1k mile is a waste of money. Hard facts are there but people still do it. Is it just a psychological thing?

In another thread on oil change interval, this is what I posted:

"In my lifetime I owned 13 new vehicles, cars and motorcycles. Way back when, I am 65, I read somewhere that your first oil change should be done at 1,000 miles regardless of the mfrs. recommendations. Oil filters do not remove very small metal particles created during manufacturing and internal parts breaking in.

Every oil pan of oil I drained at 1,000 miles looked like aluminum paint when you stirred it up with a screwdriver.

IMHO, that metal is abrasive. That is why when my GT premium reaches 1,000 miles I will have the oil and filter changed. "

Any particle that is small enough to pass through the oil filter media is smaller that the oil film thickness and passes through the bearings without causing any wear.

I'm going to change at what the manual recommends.
I am still on the fence about if I should take to the dealer where I bought car, or a private shop where I know they work on & race mustangs.
