Caught in the rain.

Sorry, I meant to post this in “What did you do to your GT350 today.”
After nearly three years of ownership and 12,500 miles, I got caught driving my car in the rain for the first time. So did some full on detailing today.

Luckily I haven’t been caught in the rain in the Shelby. A few years ago I got caught in a quick thunderstorm in my Roush. It took me 6 hours of detailing the outside of the car and then 3 hours on my friends lift to clean the underside! I got so many questions from guys stopping buy! What’s wrong with your car, are you changing the oil, what broke now? They couldn’t believe I was cleaning the underside! I even polished the mufflers! It’s still clean today! (8 years old) I always hear the same old comment! I bought my car to drive, I drive it the rain and then I just wash It! If I had a dollar for every time I heard that I could by a Shelby GT350R cash! I get it, it’s excessive but keeping my cars the way I do makes me happy! To each his own!

I managed to avoid rain for the first 4 months of ownership. Then I did my first track event and it rained all day. Kind of made it pointless to try and avoid rain after that.

In my state we've avoided rain for like 3 months now, lol. With that said, your car just lost $10,000 in resale. Guess you're stuck with it now.

Not to armchair that one, but I think giving it gas like that after hydroplaning the whole way wasn’t the best idea lol. Thankfully escaped unscathed.

17 months now and no drives in the rain. However, I live in a large master planned community with a lot of common areas and landscaped roadways. There are irrigation sprinklers going on at some point at any time of every day. Aside from slowing for wet roads to avoid splashing the underside of the car, there are those 'kamikaze' broken sprinkler heads aimed into the road to firehose you as you drive by.

I absolutely hate that. Especially since sprinkler water is so damn hard, and if you don't catch it in time it bakes onto the paint.

I drew a rainy track day at the Ridge Motorsport Park on Aug 21. It rained for most of the day. It was my first track day in the wet and I have to admit it was more fun than I originally expected. My Cup 2's did great even though they're almost shot. The good news is that there was so little wear due to the wet pavement, they're good for at least one more day!

Towards the end of the afternoon, the rain finally relented and a damp/dry line started to form in time for the last two sessions. I had hired an instructor who was in a Corvette behind me driving on slicks. In our final session, I hit 130 at the end of the front straight before braking for Turn 1. My instructor was struggling in the wet, but was trying to keep up. As I rounded the turns heading up the hill, I heard him through my headset loudly exclaim "Whoops!" I asked him what happened. He said, "I just had an off at 125 MPH!" I was afraid he'd slid across the wet grass into the far tire wall, but there's a significant run-off area there. Later, he told me he'd hit a wet spot near the end of the straight that turned his car enough to send him off. Luckily, no damage was done except a cone slap on his front fascia.

Detailing can wait. This car was meant to be driven. (1 more for Les ;)

Haha. I drove in the rain first week I had it. The only thing I shy away from is snow...because I don’t have winter tires.

What made my first drive in the rain sketchy was the fact that my rear tires are down to the wear bars and my front tires are new. I had to replace my front tires because after 12500 miles the inside shoulder was down to thread. As most know, the rear PSS tires are unavailable until October. I have them on order with my fingers crossed.

One of the many pleasures of living in Arizona is seldom seeing rain and never having to drive in it. I treat the underside of my car the same as the paint. I keep it tidy and clean by putting all four corners up on jack stands and spending time on my back underneath the car. It's not like I have anything better to do on these Covid weekends.
