Hey everyone,

Long term mustang fan here (1999 V6, 2011 GT Premium, 2013 GT Premium, 2001 Cobra), now looking at a 2020 GT PP1 (manual). I've been reading horror stories about the MT82 and MT82-D4 and definitely don't want to drop over $40K on a lemon. Does anyone know if these issues have been somewhat fixed with strong forks and the gear-lockouts? Should I stay away or pull the trigger and enjoy?

Thanks all, looking forward to being on the forum! If you're in the SLC area lets cruise.

Get ready for NO consensus.

That said, I had 2011 GT that I sold at 190K miles with NO tranny problems, the original clutch and original trans fluid. (first gen MT-82). Pulled 390 rwhp stock when it had 175K miles on the stock clutch with the original tranny fluid.

Didn't you have MT-82s in your 11 and 13 - or were they autos? Did you have problems?

My current 2019 GT PPL2 has had NO problems with the tranny (13K on the clock) - a little notchy for a few miles, then its perfectly smooth.

The MT-82 D4 suits my needs just fine - very fast spirited driving. Lord knows its better than the T-56s I had. And it's better than whatever was in that 2001 Cobra.

YMMV

I did have them in my 2011 amd 2013, but I only had both those cars for less than 10k miles (bought both used though). Thats great to hear that your 2019 is doing well! Amd yeah the 01 Cobra had an interesting gearbox that was sometimes tough to get into gear at high rpm.

Side question, any idea what a good price is on a pp1 (premium, with magneride, and active exhaust)? I built the exact car on Fords website and msrp is $51,060, have the dealer down to $45,500 right now.

Thanks for the reply!

$45,500 is a decent price for a loaded car like that. A PP with Magneride and active exhaust without 401a is hard to find. I'd try for 45K flat, but overall that's not bad territory. Also worth considering values are inflated right now. I'm sure some people have gotten similar cars for as low as 42K pre pandemic.

I believe it does have the 401a, it has the larger screen, digital tachometer, etc. Yeah prices may be inflated too

That's a heck of a price for the reported inventory levels now. And it's a current model year. I got more than that, but my Bullitt was a leftover 2019.

As far as the tranny, even 2019s have the latest improvements in shift forks, etc. I haven't heard of any issues with 2019s, and many folks abuse their cars even a little, so that's good news in my book. Good luck.

Decent price, keep in mind you can always switch the MT-82 out for a build one from Ben Calimer or do a T56 magnum swap. We sell both here at www.lethalperformance.com.

I bought a A10 for this exact reason.. it's scary to drop 40k with how many issues people have had. Now that I've had a little while to process my purchase, it seems the general consensus is that the 2019+ have had less issues with the MT.. but it's not completely gone.

If you are scared of the MT82 and you should be (mine in the shop for wired oil leak) wait and buy the Mach 1 with the Tremac.

There's no issue with the trans. There were a few MT82s that needed shift forks, that was quite some time ago.

2019 gt pp1 with the manual. 13k and no issues with the tranny. I'm not scared of a near redline shift, either. There's a bit of notchiness that's probably caused by the input shaft being designed to reduce nvh but the tranny itself is solid.

Still working on this deal, have the dealer at $45,500, and they won't budge (MSRP on Ford's website is $51,060). Debating on whether to do it or wait and get one used. This one has the 401a, active exhaust, magne-ride, digital cluster, and pp1.

Thoughts on buying or waiting for a used one with those options?
