My Uncle who used to paint cars said that paint doesn't adhere as well to aluminum like it adheres to steel. Could this be part of the issue with the ease of chipping on the aluminum hood?

Did some googlin. Many cars have this same issue - Honda was a big one. Waterborne paints are listed as the culprit.

S2000s are notorious for having thin paint and since they sit low are easily susceptible to road damage. I would expect similar issues with any aluminum front end sports car. Hopefully it's not an issue beyond what is considered normal.

I asked my dealer to fix my rock chips. They said they would only respray the hood. I refused.
My dealer sent the pictures to ford. They recommended against painting the hood for the paint booger that popped or rock chips. Too difficult to get the stripes to line back up and paint to match. Just to air brush, sand, and repeat to put down a few layers of paint. Once it's level seal it with some clear coat.

I haven't shown them the rock chips, but assume it will be the same process or a paint pen. I have a pretty good rep with the dealer so I don't see it being a problem just to touch it up. Seems weird they refused to help you out.

I had a full 3M film put on the front. They did a really good job, as I couldn't even tell where the film is without looking the edges really close.

So based on this, it would be advisable to get some coverage on the front clip, doors, fenders....

Guess this will be one of the first things I have done when I get the car.

I did full front (everything forward of the front doors) as well as the rocker panels behind the wheels.

Then, I did CQartz on top of everything, which is an ultra-hard semi-permanent sealant that keeps the car looking good and helps with some chips.

Any close-ups of the chips and/or PPF?

I wrapped my entire car. Glad I did it now. I mainly did it since I plan to track it. Sounds like the front would be sandblasted completely on the track without it.

Where did you take in in San Diego? Would you recommend them?

Thanks,
Brian

Evan at AutoArmour for the clear bra. Talk to Ashley though.

Wes at Elite Finish Detailing for the pre-paint correction and the Cquartz

I would highly recommend them. The nice thing is that they are both in the same building (they share space) so they can tag team on the car and you don't have to shuttle it from shop to shop.

Thin paint is probably done as a cost saving measure as much as anything. When my car gets detailed I am going have them put a paint thickness meter on it and see how thin it actually is. Another reason why I am happy to have a Xpel ultimate clear vinyl done on the front clip
Marketing could spin this. It is about less weight. More performance. Less drag. Yeah... That's the reason.
