Here's a crazy idea. When the PTWA is applied, it's basically tiny molten balls of metal, splattered on the sides that weld together, then machined. What if some of those little spray particles aren't adhering like they should? Like when you have a contaminated welding rod without proper flux to clean and prep the surface?

This of course would not happen to every car, but to a small percentage.

This is the fine metal "glitter" that i found in my passenger side catch can today. I have emptied this thing 4-5 times now and now noticing this. While it doesnt look bad, im sure it has been eaten up a bit before coming through.

Will those metal particles stick to a magnet or not? PTWA coating would be ferrous and stick to a magnet.

Tried and couldn't tell if it was the magnet or oil sticking. I'm sending an oil sample next change so they will better be able to tell

Put as many particles as possible on a paper towel and let the oil soak up in the towel. Then run a magnet over the particles to see if they get picked up by the magnet.

Metal flakes in the catch can...

Could they be just from the metal treads of the can from unscrewing the top? I know there is the question of being magnetic, but I’m not sure if your response is possibly indicating oil just sticking to the magnet (i.e. viscous).

I can’t say I’ve ever seen this...

Definitely thought about that as well, and it is very possible. I did look at the can as close as i could and didnt seen any spots where the metal would be from the threads. After finding the metal on the spark plug and in the cylinder i just ended up ruling that it was from that.

Sorry, and yes couldnt tell if the metal was suspended in the oil and on the magnet. Wiped it off on a paper towel and you could see the metal, but too small to see if it was magnetic.
