Q&A with Dave Pericak

Agreed but this is probably just a way of creating some styling separation between the trims. Instead of different badging we could see a fully painted diffuser on the base to distinguish it from the Ecoboost? The GT of course would have the GT badge as further separation.

The point is there are people who will buy a GT that would actually prefer the body colored diffuser. More customization choices are better and I can't imagine this adding a big cost.

It seems there are 2 diffusers we've seen: the one with just the inner parts of diffuser painted has been most common and seen on all but 1 vehicle (in all trim levels -EB4, GT, etc). This looks like:
attachment.webp

And then we've seen this one on a GT with Performance Pack (right??)

And then there seems to be a group of fans who are HOPING for a third version with NO body color paint. Do I have that right?

I like verison 1 in the Triple yellow example above. Followed by version 2 in red. I don't care for the non painted diffuser, unless maybe they did the same gloss as the "racetrack" around the tailights rather than matte black. But the rest of the lower side and front trim is matte black, so some of the diffuser should probably be matte black, like in option 1 for consistency.

edit: and after looking again I just noticed the all red and the partial yellow portions of the diffuser are different. The red is smooth the yellow has a verticle line in the middle of each painted section, see that? Never noticed that til now.

I'm afraid this is possibly just a victim of preproduction parts. It's most likely ford just experimenting with the different styles to see what works best with the car. I wouldn't be surprised if this is all standardized by the time production happens. Or it might be something like GT models get the triple yellow type diffuser and V6 and ecoboost get red style diffuser.

Whether the vane is in place or not, I believe the vote is for that part either being body color or unpainted black plastic to go with the side and front lower trim.

Interesting. I had not caught that until you pointed it out. This gives me another reason to believe the diffuser will be trim specific as Jarstang's info points out. It's not just a matter of differet paint color, and I think it is no coincidence that the more aggressive, partially painted diffuser is the one that seems to be preferred by most here. I would guess that's what ends up on the GT.

One thing we can all agree on I think is that this Mustang's rear end gives Sophie Turner a good run for the money on best azz...

We did find out in the design video the rear diffuser is functional so the could be playing with different aero effects with the smooth and fin versions

I still dont understand how that diffuser could possibly be functional. For that to be true is would need some seriously clean air feeding it , requiring an uninterrupted pan extending from the leading edge to at least the differential. It should really have a full pan. I'm going to look at putting as close to a "full" pan as possible (and my modular diffuser) on my car without having to worry about exhaust and diff temps in any sort of driving, or putting through traffic with no airflow.

By virtue of luck most likely... The air deflectors just in front of the fuel tank create a noticeable high pressure area around the rear suspension/fuel tank. I suppose that tiny diffuser might pull just enough air out from under the car to call it "functional" but certainly not functional enough to create substantial down force. Like you said, it isn't nearly long enough, the angle is too steep, and the fences aren't nearly tall enough. Add to that that the air under the car is free to exit wherever it damn well pleases and you have very little down force being produced... calling it "functional" is probably about the same as saying the 05-09 rear spoilers were "functional". Sure, they were, but not enough to really be noticeable with or without it.

Here's a few miscellaneous tidbits, not from Pericak, but some credible sources that will remain unnamed.

  • "Aggressive goals" = aggressive goals. This is not euphemistic marketing speak and work is still being done in this area.
  • Weight has been lost. This is a work in progress as stated.
  • Power increase is also a work in progress.
  • MT82 has received significant attention even though reported problems were greatly exaggerated.
  • Materials and processes used for the new platform are more advanced than have been announced at this point (hence points 1 & 2).
  • Diffuser color is trim-related on the prototypes. It may also be on production cars.
  • Interior packages will be simplified.
  • Reverse camera is standard on every car.
This is extremely encouraging! Thank you very much for asking and posting this.

I love this, I must say. Except that sounds like the MyFord Touch would be required on all trims?
It can be placed in a small "window"inside the rear view mirror.

The display screen on the base radio system looks like it could accommodate a viewing area.
