Until a few years ago, before Tremec released their own transmission oil, they recommended ATF for most of their product line. ATF's are not the best for manuals with gears due to the metal to metal contact.Good question, and something I missed. Yes, I specifically asked about the 3160. Thanks @murick
Tremec HP MTF has a Viscosity Rating of 12.1 @ 100C (212F) or 71.6 @ 40C 104F)
OEM Motorcraft Mercon LV has a Viscosity Rating of 6.0 @ 100C (212F) or 29.6 @ 40C 104F)
BG Syncro Shift II has a Viscosity Rating of 7.11 @ 100C (212F) or 37.85 @ 40C 104F)
We have invested thousands of dollars sampling fluids. We sample random bottles of our BG products just to keep everyone honest. We use Lake at SPEEDiagnostix for most of our testing now, previously we have sampled some of the popular fluids with Jet-Care as blind samples.
Straight BG Syncro Shift II Tested as 7.1 @ 100C (212F) or 38 @ 40C 104F)
2.7 Quarts of BG SS II with 6oz MGC Tested as 7.4 @ 100C (212F) or 42 @ 40C 104F)
Tremec has almost always recommended ATF type fluids (or the BG Sourced GM Synchromesh) and since the release of their own MTF with higher viscosity, that line has really blurred.
In discussions with the engineers at BG, the shifting performance comes from the ability of the fluid to get out of the way of the synchro's and have the proper friction level for the film to speed match the gear sets during a shift. We have explored other products that BG offers that have a higher viscosity but were cautioned from using them in anything but a very high load/high heat application (wheel to wheel racing) so we never offered it. The SS II seems to work well for most applications.
