As a teenager (60 years ago!) I admired sports cars such as MGs and TR3s. Really had to have string-back gloves! At a sporting goods store I bought left-handed and right-handed golf gloves. A really cheap work-around. I imagine I looked downright cool, driving the family VW bus...

Bicycle gloves. Light weight, very flexible. I have arthritis in my hands and they help keep in the body heat. No need to use the heated wheel.

When i do more than normal driving i pack my flight gloves, they got one plus, in a worst case, they are fire resistant. I try to avoid driving with dirty hands (or dirty me) anyway... well i cant drive without my dirty mind, so much for that. :D

Back in the day track-day outfit would get laughed out of the Tech line now:
At Riverside International Raceway, 1971. Turn Four observers' tower above the bonnet, Turn Six grandstand above the "Kamm back", Villem B Haan Nomex™, Bell Star™ helmet, war surplus store aviators gloves, Clark Wallaby™ shoes, Ansen Sprint™ 13x7" wheels, Dunlop Mexico City surplus F1-front 11.00x13 tires all around, custom muffler-delete exhaust pipe with VHT Hi-Temp™ blue paint, Contac™ paper numbers.

You might laugh at this today, but that year, with this lash-up, I had the Solo I Lap Record for B Sedan at Willow Springs when there was only "Big Willow". (You could look it up)

C&D take on driving gloves.

I saw a guy driving a black GT350 (could have been an R, only saw rear end) with driving gloves on going west on Big Bend Road in Riverview / Apollo Beach area and jump on 75 North Saturday afternoon around 2pm. I immediately thought of this thread, then wondered if the guy was a member here. Figured no better place than this thread to ask

I got gloves to help with grip and keep steering wheel from getting messed up. I wear them almost every time I track the car.

I only wear them at the track (along with a full suit, shoes, balaclava, full restraint seat and harness...) ;)

Same here. To some its overkill but it is what I have been doing sense the mid 70's and old habits die hard.

No, I don't wear driving gloves on track and I don't wear gloves when I'm driving period unless it's cold outside.

I tried driving shoes. I didn't like them because I'm used to my regular street shoes. I didn't notice better feel. I just noticed more trouble finding the correct foot position when trying to rev match downshift while on the brakes.

I don't think I would notice better feel with gloves, either. It would just be an unusual different feeling while driving my car. I prefer not to do something different on track than what I'm used to when it comes to operating the controls of the car.

Now, roll bar and harness on track - yes 100%. The other stuff? Nope.

I've always wanted a roll cage but I can't. Just had a kid three months ago and I need the back seats.

Aside from fire retardent material, why wear them? Does anyone use them at the track? Should I get some other than my motorcycle gloves?

If you do not wear gloves for track use, why not?
If you do, what do you recommend?
Every time I put driving gloves on, it seems to make me want to have a proper British accent.

If you wear something like this:

Chances are pretty good that we can't be friends. If you're on track and wear a suit for fire protection and your gloves are of the same type, then I get it. Even if you want some nomex style glove for sweaty hands without a suit, I can kind of understand (Although, I'd probably get something less expensive from Ironclad).

I bought a pair of fingerless work gloves at home depot (LOL...) My hands were getting sweaty and extremely tired gripping the alcantara steering wheel in the 350. There is also some abrasive stitching down by the thumb rests on the steering wheel. They made a big difference at track and on the tail of the dragon with confidence, control and feel. I think I might try the baseball batting gloves as well...

I don't use driving gloves because I don't track my car (not that we even have a track here at all) but I have a cheap pair from Amazon that's made of breathable fabric and silicone; the silicone part is in the palm and fingers for grip. These were intended for cycling I guess, but I use them when I work out at the gym because it cushions the handgrips and stuff on the machines I use. I've never used them for driving as I haven't had a need to. The leather wheel on my car is grippy enough and I don't sweat (I use the A/C all the time).

I have a question though. Why would you need gloves for "fire protection"? I don't know about all the nuances of racing, but on a daily driver taken to the track at times, what would you need "fire protection" on your gloves for?
