Clutch shudder -- used '20 PP2

I have 3800 miles on my 2022 car and if it sits more than a week it will shudder pretty bad for 10-15 starts from a stop........then it becomes buttery smooth!!

I figgered it was light rust on the flywheel that needed to be "buffed off" from use!!

My '18 does this if it sits for a few days.
I just got back from vacation and noticed it happening again.

Mine used to do this when my clutch feed line was leaking and I let it sit for a while. After I replaced that, it's pretty much always smooth. For reference, this is the line that runs from the brake master reservoir down to the clutch master. This is a common fault with these cars, and it somehow lets air into the clutch line which I'm guessing allows the plates to essentially shudder against each other until the air is worked through and the hydraulic pressure returns. Just my theory though. I haven't seen it since, and my clutch engagement is closer to the floor now.

I also vacuum bled the whole system after I replaced that line.

Another possibility is a replacement stock clutch Improperly installed. Hopefully the carfax checks out.

Make sure the warranty covers the clutch. Most do not cover wear items like brakes and clutch... If it does, I'd buy the car if it is what you want.

He got the car. She's a beauty. He has 30 days to return it and the clutch will be covered as part of the Carmax warranty since it was pointed out prior to sale.

Now we gotta find him a set of daily driver wheels. The PP2 wheels are kinda extreme with their huge sizing and super soft compound.

For the money, this was an incredible deal.

This is my experience too. If it sits in damp weather and I get the shudder. It clears after a bit of driving. I'm of the same opinion as Coosawjack, rust on the flywheel.

My 22 shuddered very slightly. I changed to a braided clutch line and it went away. The car feels infinitely better after that too. Stock clutch with 28k miles and i learned how to drive manual on it.

try changing the line out - it’s about $80, 20 min install and 1 hour of pumping the clutch to bleed it

Also ford warranty will only cover clutch if it’s a defect with the clutch. Being that there’s previous owners - if there’s a clutch problem then it’s most likely from over speed into 2nd or 1st

she ain't a porsche so things like that kinda go with the territory.

Bridgestone Potenza RE050A. The tires are brand new. I'm not familiar with this tire or how long they last but we'll find him a set of PP wheels with 255/40-19s or something along those lines.

These would work as daily wheels with 275/40-19s on both front and rear (same size as my Bullitt rear). That'd be more comfortable and you could get touring tires in that size but the fronts stick out too far IMO. Need to remove that imaginary 1" wheel spacer up front.

My Dad and I are looking at getting him a '20 PP2 from Carmax. It's a 2-owner car, 401a, 15k miles, $36k.

We've driven a lot of Mustangs and this is the first one that I've seen with this problem. When taking off in first (it's most pronounced in first) and letting the clutch out smoothly, there is a noticeable shudder as the clutch engages. It's not super bad but noticeable and completely repeatable.

I've read 2 things:
1. This is normal and some people with brand new cars have experienced the same
2. The flywheel is warped

Aside from having a dealer look at it (he has 30 days to return the car), is there something else we should look at to narrow it down? I fear it's the latter since it's a PP2 car and people generally drive them hard and none of the other Mustangs we drove (8 or so) did this.

My 2020 Bullitt has done this since new with 10 miles on the clock.
letting out clutch slowly without throttle and it will judder and you can hear the car shaking.
best thing is to give a little extra throttle and grab clutch right at the biting point.
steeda spring made it worse as I couldn’t control the clutch as well.
Still does it with 30,000 miles and no issues with the clutch.

Don't get performance pack wheels. They are heavy and pain to clean (and IMO not that great looking). I'd recommend looking at lmr.com. You can get a set of lightweight 19x10 replicas of the pp2 that can be rotated for improved tire wear...and they don't poke out like the factory wheels.

Why would you buy a 2nd set of wheels & tires? Your dad would be missing the entire point to driving a PP2 car, and what gives it it's performance.

Just drive it as it is, there's nothing "extreme" about the wheels & tires. They're the OEM/standard PP2 wheels, and the tires are not a "super soft compound". The Bridgestones are actually a harder compound than what came on the car from the factory.
