Honestly , at the new price , unless you are in a hurry better to have a long block built less(reusing your heads ) or the same with new heads .

if the bare block has also not jumped in price($800) , and you can reuse your heads , you could have an “alluminator“ long built with the drop in Mahle pistons($800) , H -tuff rods($1000) , main studs($250) , billet OPG /CS ($300), head studs($350) , better head gaskets($200) and PAC springs($500) .
Assuming $300 for bearings ,$300 balancing , $300 for machining for main studs and $1200 if you are paying to have it assembled .
About $6300.
if you need new heads , but can use yours as core, add another $1K.
$7300 .

Sorry forgot to add cost of new crank ... so add about $300 to above .
Building a long block from scratch with all new components-Heads /cams/rocker arms /lifters(both expensive -$700) /VCT /covers will add about $3500 to the cost of the short block so just over $10K ... I may have one for sale in the near future 😎.

Less $ and much better components than the alluminator Engine (but complete engine and comes with warranty ).
I suppose also if you are spending that much you might as well add sleeves for another $$2500... so $13K (same cost as alluminator) for a “bullet proof (no such thing ) long block .... or $11k if you do a non sleeved 5.2(next best thing to sleeves ).... may also have one for sale ... in the more distant future 😎

the OEM long block @ $4300 was .

What is the difference between the f150 and the mustang shortblock? Because the f150 is still $1800 and pretty much the same thing
May be one of the resident experts can chime in ...calling @bauern .
when the long block was $4300 , you were basically getting the short block for $800(or less) since buying the top end parts would cost at least $3500 but probably even more.

I am sure someone at Ford realized the “mistake “ .

Same pistons same rods same crankshaft same bearings same rings. The only thing I can think is the balance is for higher rpm but that doesn’t account for the price difference

Hmmm .
Might be time to grab one before Ford jacks up the price too
I was considering building/sleeving my hurt block but also just using it as a core .

If We were talking long block then there’s some small differences but shortblock I really can’t see the difference. If you are in the market for a shortblock you may want to pull the trigger before someone figures out the mistake

Finally got a set of oil pump gears and I promptly installed them and my billet crank sprocket. I was going to run gt350 chains and boss tensioners, but tasca was weeks out on being able to deliver also I think the stock pieces are up to the task. Now I just got to find some time over the next few days to get the motor dropped in the car and start putting it all back together.

Are cam phaser bolts new. And cam journal bolts. It’s a good idea to use new ones

I am certified in NDT and DT metal QC testing, the photos did look like the crank was a poor quality forging.
