Norm, if you're talking about the new Chargers, they're 4 doors, you know that.
Of course. But the car it claims to be the current iteration of was not, and neither one has any 'sports car DNA' in it.

You guys know what I mean. I'm from goddamn 'Merica, and I don't cotton to the European definition of a sports car...which is what? Something with 2 seats and a four-banger?
Sorry, but the definition of a sports car was firmly established in this country during the 1950's and 1960's, and there were no regional (continental?) differences like you're trying to imply. The main reason you're thinking it's a European definition is because there were no nimble 2-seaters built as regular production by a major mfr in North America.

Sports cars were never about power and straight line acceleration; that was for hot rods and drag race cars with little or no crossover until about the time some guy named Shelby started dropping SBF's into the AC Ace chassis and called them Cobras.

A 911 has rear seats...so there's that.
I'm pretty sure that there was a time when the 911 was specifically defined as NOT being a sports car for racing classification purposes, mainly because of that rear seating. There was even considerable argument over whether the Corvette was a true "sports car" or not.

I have a hard time underatanding why someone would want a brutish, highly visceral car, but not want to row their own gears.

For me, it's the best part of waking up each day.
But we sure do agree on this point. Next  round's on me, and if you can claim it by midnight there might just be a slice of b'day cake left.

I ventured into the past and used the chrome-plated dial the other day.

When you can't afford to have the car shift for you...Manual
Also:

When you want to bench race magazine times then claim you would rather be slower shifting yourself.

I think I read that the Porche 911 and BMW M series will be AT only
Wrong with Porsche - see link below

http://blog.caranddriver.com/porsch...rist-911-gt-model-with-a-manual-transmission/

Also, the Cayman GT 4 is manual only.

I'm shocked that apparently the vast majority of people across the pond can't drive a manual?:eyebulge: First they remove our gearstick, then it'll be our acceleration peddle, before the driverless car becomes the norm and driving is fully automated. The arguments will be the same, driverless cars are more efficient, yes but completely soulless.

There is definitely soul in launching a turbo car in boost and getting 1.5x-1.6x 60ft.

My stupidity. It is funny. What do you think of the WSJ article?
All jokes aside?

I don't think the article matters... much like this thread... although the thread is entertaining.

I grew up on sticks... at a very young age started off with tractors. Then moved on to the farm vehicle, which was a truck with 3 on the column (so a manual with the gears on the steering wheel column, for those who don't know), then motorcycles, and finally driving cars on the road.

All my life I driven both. Our road cars were mostly automatics, even though my mom, sisters, friends and cousins all knew how to drive sticks.

Why did they purchase mostly autos? Not sure... they were vehicles... no one ever debated why dad/mom came home with an auto or stick. Guess is they purchased what they could get the best deal at the time.

The reality is this:

I drive a mustang... it is an auto... it is fast (have tune). There is no place in Maryland I can legally drive this car to the max... or maybe even half the max.

I can outrun most cars out there from the light (not speeding, but getting away from traffic and stupid people)... have more than enough power to pass or get on the freeway.

On curvy roads I'd rather focus on the road than trying to shift - sport mode keeps the revs high anyway. Plus, normally the speed limit is so low (relative to what the car can do) you can't really "have tons of fun" (my definition of fun might differ from yours).

If I had plans to track the car my thoughts might be different and I might have went with a stick. Dunno.

My last car of 10 years was a stick... went auto this time.

When I test drove the manual mustang I felt the gears were not that smooth... and the auto "felt" faster when I went on the test drive.

And I believe the fact (or at least what I read) is that more people live in cities than live in the country. Shoot, even the "city folk" have moved out to where I grew up... we had one cop back then, now they have a police department. In my youth we would carve up the backroads (God knows a lot of kids died on those roads)... now the speed limit is 35/45 and cops routinely monitor (good thing).

Last point, fines for speeding have went through the roof!!! Insurance is killer...

The mustang in the hands of a professional on a race course is a tool... the rest of us are posers and posting. lol

I dont know if i will be able to enjoy the car if i have to nearly break my ankle before it decides to engage. Is there any way to lower the engagement point?
