I’m shocked this made it past QA. Assuming they made a change in the 2022-2023 models, wouldn’t that change require a new QA regression (test all related components)? The phrase “when attempting to steer” makes me think you can’t steer if the primary sensor fails, and the “crash” may be more likely. I’d love more detail on how the issue was introduced, giving confidence that the impacted vehicles are indeed due for an update.

No change was made from 21 to 22/23. The NHTSA documents say "Inverted wires during machine maintenance at the supplier’s secondary digital torque sensor calibration station."

So the calibration equipment is at fault.

The NHTSA document goes on to say "Ford’s team reviewed plant records to determine the population of affected vehicles. The Ford process is capable of tracing steering gear production to the vehicle in which the steering gear is installed. Affected vehicles are equipped with steering gears that may have been improperly calibrated"...

...and that 100% of the recalled cars are affected.

Only 2 warranty claims as of early June.

See attached.

Thanks for sharing this! I originally thought the reversed polarity was on the car itself - it being on the calibration equipment makes me feel a bit better. Ford's approach to update the software is surely more cost effective than calibrating the cars again.

I noticed today the the Fordpass app now states that a software fix is now available to correct this issue. I am guessing that the time required to fix both recalls is the same as it would be to fix one. Both issues fixed with one update ?

I didn't even want to do the first one but I guess ill do both now lol. Got to setup some cameras and warning stickers "you are being recorded, no joy rides" or something.
Some additional suggestions:
Do a walkaround video/photo including the odometer.
Zero the trip odometers
Zero the accelerometer
Zero the mpg
Activate valet mode.
Watch the tech drive the car away (if its a manual) to see if they know how to drive it.

Any combination of these should give you an idea if any shennanigans occurred.

Defo (but I just trust photos).

Zero the trip odometers
Zero the accelerometer
Zero the mpg
I struggle with the logic behind this ?

Trip odometers are included with the main odometer, and the other values can simply be reset back to zero hiding any shenanigans ?

If you are going to go that far, taking the car in with slightly high, but still sensible accelerometer values would be a much better option - obvious if it’s been cleared, and nigh on impossible to get exact value matching if someone does reset it.

MPG will likely be poor anyway due to extended idling.

Activate valet mode.
Defo, if you don’t know or trust who will drive it.

That’s not typical a problem over here, but I see why it might be for you guys.

I’m lucky that I have a great tech that knows when my car is coming in and we always have a little chat (social and car) before he takes it away.

I actually encourage him to put it in track mode and blip it a few times on his way into the garage - it’s the only time I get to hear the exhaust when I’m not in the car lol (much louder than you expect :sunglasses:)

My car has never clocked more than 0.1 of a mile during a service visit, including its extended warranty stay. I think it only clocks that much due to the odometer resolution and how soon it’s due to increment - I’ve had it back once without an odometer change !

I had the brake recall done yesterday - FordPass doesn't show the second one applying to my car.

I did record them with the dash cam, they didn't know and it was very entertaining watching the footage. Also told the service manager be careful if they drive it but they didn't leave the lot.

They can have mobile service come to you to do the update. No need to drop it off at a dealer (unless they don't have mobile service).

I had them come to my work for the brake fluid update. It took 30 mins. They don't need to drive the car.

Just had mine done by mobile service. Took a little over 20 minutes. I made sure to fully charge the battery the night before to prevent any problems with the update. Only thing I could see changed was that my dash selectable gauges dropped off and had to be re-selected.

Anyone know if these software recall updates mess with your tune? I heard that you have to go back to stock tune or that it changes it back to a stock tune ? Don’t won’t that to happen while I’m on e85 😅

Not sure about the tune, but they will most definitely erase any changes you've make with forescan, such as tire size.

My guess is any reflash done by the dealer takes the car back to stock.

Here was my experience with the brake recall (from a PM with another forum member as we were wondering about the outcome) :

“Just letting you know that I had the recall done (car was in for MOT, service and brake fluid), and it all went OK.

My experience with the recall is that my car lost some settings, but only settings that you configure from the dash menus i.e. nothing that I had changed or customised with Forscan.

For example, I had turned the axle temp gauge on in forscan so it was a dash menu option (as I did with the doors auto locking on drive off), and the update turned the features off, but left them in the menu so I could simply reactive them with the steering wheel buttons.

Now I'm not totally sure if the settings reset because of the update OR because the battery was disconnected for an extended period of time (strut brace off to do the plugs).

The car kept the 'ford performance' splash screen, all the my colour settings, and all the stereo / carplay settings.

Things I needed to reset (although I've probably missed some) :

  • Deactivating keyless entry.
  • Reactivating auto lock.
  • Setting up launch control.
  • Setting up shift light.
  • Creating my mode again.
  • Active cruise / collision warning settings.
  • Heater settings.

So overall it all went well with nothing to worry about, it just needs 10 mins configuring the menus to your liking again afterwards”

I know that doesn’t answer the question about a tune, but it might help with regards to your comments about ForScan :like:

Well I can tell you first hand that the brake fluid recall absolutely did wipe out my forescan tire size setting. The dealer actually agreed to redo it when I complained. 🤷‍♂️
