1st Oil Change

I usually go with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my cars. I haven't looked at the Boron content in it.

After a quick Google search it looks pretty high.

I always use MotorCraft Full Synthetic in my Coyotes.
6 years of it in my 15gt and just did my second oil change on the Mach yesterday. Never had a tick or an issue.
Pretty much the same schedule, 1st one at 3k and usually every 5 to 6k for the rest depending if there was a track day in there I’ll shorten it to 4K like this last one on the Mach.
Took advantage of the last day of 2021 being 42 degrees in Chicago and the Mach flipped 7k miles so I spent New Year’s Eve afternoon with a cigar and some Weller with the garage door open changing her oil… life is good!
Today, 6” of snow and teens in the forecast.

Sounds like a good way to change the oil. A nice cigar with smooth bourbon always a good combo.

I'm intrigued about the Boron comment also. I dug up Blackstone reports from other vehicles, and Ford Full Synthetic 5w30 appears to have around 134 units of Boron. Motorcraft Synthetic Blend is at about 107 units. Regular Amsoil 5w30 shows 150 units. Blackstone's universal average Boron content is about 50 units.

Since the regular Amsoil OE stuff is about on par with other full synthetics as far as cost goes (and meets the Ford oil spec), I'm most likely going to be running this oil.

Any Boron numbers on the Amsoil Signature series 5w30?

The only thing I could find was for 0W30 and it was 340PPM for new oil. It should be close for other weights I would think.

I changed my factory fill oil two weeks ago, it had about 3,800 miles on it. The oil monitor said less than 5% of life left. This factory fill oil had two track sessions on it.

Here is the report with my PII removed. I refilled the car with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, I'm trying to keep the boron counts as high as I can.

That’s all I’ve ever used as well in my cars. Wonder if I should give the Mach 1 royal purple or amsoil? Not sure if it’s hype or they are that much better.

1700 miles and still waiting, got the factory 5-30w and a spare plug all waiting. Along with a bottle of certec (LOL).

To be honest interpretation is beyond my expertise. I'm very happy to hear you say it reads well.

I was mostly curious about the factory fill Boron counts, as in previous postings it seemed that the factory fill contained more Boron than off the shelf motorcraft oil, leading us to the suspicions that Ford is putting extra additives in the factory fill (a lot of manufacturers do). A lot of people with engine ticks reported them right after the first change, adding to our suspicion. My Factory fill Boron counts are not nearly as high as another who reported, out of Germany I believe.... So we take that for what it is worth. By posting if this helps the community I'm more than happy to lend a hand....

I have always maintained that I can't empirically prove high borons will prevent the tick, but I had a friend who used Ceratec which is known to have very highs boron counts (among other detergents) on a 5.0 and his tick went away immediately, and stayed away. It was an amazing difference believe me.

An interesting side note, while I was at Ford's Track Attack in Charlotte, some of the cars ticked, others did not. They were all low mileage from talking to others. My car for the day had 1,500 miles and no tick.

For context on my report, I strictly adhered to break in procedures. I even went so far as to leave for my destination early to ensure I was always bringing the car up to temp. During brake in I did exactly zero short trips, all were 20 mins plus on purpose.

After brake in I ran two track sessions at two different tracks, both are high speed and high rev. I also had a pretty aggressive canyon drive of a couple hours. After brake in my longer highway trips 1-2 hours, were at 65-75 mph, mostly low end of that range to see max MPG I could get. I topped off with .5 to 1qt of Motorcraft Syn blend during this interval.

My 14GT had a tick ever since the first oil change. Changed oil every 10k miles each time it ticked for about 1k miles then it would go away. Always used the motor craft synthetic blend. This was my oil analysis at 120k miles below:

No tick after my first oil change at 1k with Mobil1 Extended Performance. At 6k, used Pennzoil Full Synthetic (not Platinum) and it started ticking (typewriter tick) like crazy. Added 1/3 bottle of Ceratec, started it and no ticking.

First drive since my oil change on Sunday with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 and haven't heard anything different in 15 miles. I'll report back if that changes after a few more miles but no ticks or anything.

It's normal that they don't fill it to max in the factory. I filled 0.5 liter after first 2000 km as well. Nothing since (+4500 km), it's still at max.
