Reading through the messages about the typewriter tick and that Ford uses a different oil (with more Boron) at the factory, I’ll delay my first oil change until 5,000 miles or so. I found that Royal Purple 5-30 meets Ford’s spec requirements and has a good amount of Boron

That’s all I’ve ever used as well in my cars. Wonder if I should give the Mach 1 royal purple or amsoil? Not sure if it’s hype or they are that much better.
I know that RP meets the Ford specs for the Mach 1. There are various types of M1 and I think the 5-20 does but not the 5-30. If you do a search in this forum, you’ll find older messages about this topic; mainly how to avoid the typewriter tick using Liquid Molly’s Ceratec, which I found has Boron. Hence, I started searching for oils with Boron content that met Ford’s specs

Funny, I've been reading on this topic before my car comes. I usually use Valvoline MaxLife in my other vehicles and Castrol in an air cooled VW beetle and Harley.

I've read Ford calls out the blended (synthetic and traditional) Motorcraft 5W (winter viscosity)30 (operating temp 212 deg viscosity). The oil is thicker hot than cool and as such most engine wear occurs while the engine is warming up. Always best to ensure your engine comes to full operating temperature when started cold. I thought I read this helps with the motor tick as well.

Tighter engine machining tolerances, mitigating sludge/deposits and lower volatility for mileage and high temp performance are drivers for superior oil. Both the Ford oil and the filters (made by Purolator) are highly regarded and meet CAFE regs. The Motorcraft oil is a blend of Group II (80%) and Group III (20%) base stocks. Conoco built a joint venture Excel Paralubes refinery with Pennzoil in Layfette, LA. Conoco started making all of their products blends when Conoco merged with Phillips.

There are a lot of other superior synthetic blended oils out there. Just ensure yours meets the Ford spec WSS-M2C945-A.
AMSOIL Signature Series Synthetic Oil
Castrol EDGE Extended Performance
Mobil 1 Synthetic Motor Oil
Royal Purple HPS
Valvoline MaxLife
My buddy uses Mobil One in all his vehicles, including his Mustang and swears by it.

I'm probably going to stick to the recommended Motorcraft oil and filter unless this thread influences me differently...

When was the last time that you heard of an engine being damaged by poor lubrication due to the oil?…
It’s what I thought
As long that you change the oil and filter regularly, the car will end up at the junkyard for other problems than lubrication related
I can’t stand Amsoil, not because it’s a bad quality oil but because of their bs marketing and pyramidal scheme
Who care if an oil lubricate 10% better if a regular oil is good enough that your engine lubrication system will outlast the car????
As I said it’s almost like snake oil

not questioning your response I’m just trying to learn and to be clear I don’t have a M1 yet. It’s my understanding the M1 uses 5w30, am I correct?. If so then the oil spec you listed above (according to Mobile 1 ) is a 5w20. Please clarify as I will be one to do the first oil change around the first 1K as well.

5W30 is the correct oil for 2021 and up and Mobil 1 has a 5W30.

i have never had an engine that even burned oil. ford, gm, toyota and audi. i'm confident in using mobil 1 but @OutWest comment about boron has me interested. i want to avoid the "tick" if possible and hopefully do it without adding ceratec or any other additives. if royal purple does that it would be worth the change.

Actually the Mach 1 supplement says WSS-M2C962-A1. During my research I found M1 5-30 does not meet that but 5-20 does. Since the Mach 1 requires 5-30, I started looking for other alternatives. I know Royal Purple 5-30 does and has good boron addictive. Correct me if I am wrong

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 was noticeably less "BBQ ticky" then Motorcraft 5w20 or M1 5w20 in my car. If that is your main concern then I'd give it a shot, it is a good oil.

No way I'd pay for a weird ass boutique oil from Royal Purple, I think any offering from M1, Pennzoil, Castrol, Valvoline, etc is as good, if not better since they continuously innovate and improve their formulations. Amsoil seems like a cult, probably a good product but I prefer things that are readily available from multiple sources.

I'm intrigued about the Boron comment also. I dug up Blackstone reports from other vehicles, and Ford Full Synthetic 5w30 appears to have around 134 units of Boron. Motorcraft Synthetic Blend is at about 107 units. Regular Amsoil 5w30 shows 150 units. Blackstone's universal average Boron content is about 50 units.

Since the regular Amsoil OE stuff is about on par with other full synthetics as far as cost goes (and meets the Ford oil spec), I'm most likely going to be running this oil.

I spent hours looking over numerous threads on the coyote "tick" issue. I came away pretty convinced that Ford uses certain "friction modifiers" or additives for the factory fill. I also came across an MSDS for a Ford engine oil friction modifier, I think it was called "XL something".... I never spent the time to determine that Boron is the key ingredient, happy for "OutWest's" contribution here.

A friend of mine used Ceratec and it took the tick away, I heard it personally before and after, I rode many times in that car. It completely disappeared for him, this does not happen for everyone, so it is prudent to try and avoid the tick form the start. It is something I have thought about too for my oil change.

Thanks to Fishtales for providing a list of 5W30 Syn Blends meeting the Ford Specification
