Did a full synthetic oil change at 1,600 miles just to get the break in oil out. Only have 4,000 miles now, but it’s been a year since last changed. Do I worry about miles or months? Note it’s garage kept and non tracked. Thanks

You worry about both, kind of whichever comes first. Once a year or x amount of miles is usually the best advice. However driving habits also play a factor into how often you need to change.

Miles and months both count. I change my oil (full synthetic too) every 3,000 miles or so, though many say it need not be done that often. I figure it couldn't hurt.

You're approaching 3,000 miles since your last oil change. I know little about the speed at which various oils age, but I suspect the year it's been for you is not a problem. (Does the oil still have clarity, or is it dirty black?)

So, change the oil in the next couple of hundred miles.

I follow 1yr or 5k miles whichever comes first. This goes for my garage kept toys and dailys. Obviously, I hit the 5k quite often on the dailys. The Toys, I change every June. I dont drive more than 1500 a year on the toy cars.

I'm like others have said, 1 year or 5k miles, whichever happens first. The car alert for oil change only goes by miles as far as I know so I wouldn't rely on that. Changing oil never hurts your car so since you seem concerned about it I'd change it. Nothing like peace of mind.

Since my Mach 1 is my secondary car, I rarely ever hit the mileage for an oil change. It's usually due to time that I change mine and the oil indicator in the car will also tell you that as well. Every time I check my Google Keep notes for oil changes, it's always near the 1-year mark when I change it.

I believe the app is timing it as well. My oil is clearly degrading simply by being in the engine, which sits in the garage :).

You are correct. Oil oxidizes all of the time. It just oxidizes at a higher rate at higher temperatures. There are many other things going on even when the engine is not running. For instance, the blow by products that mix with the oil and the water that is formed from heat cycles and humidity in the air combine to form acids that can corrode internal parts. I kind of liken it to the circulatory system of a man who moderates his alcohol intake, chooses a healthy diet, and does not smoke to a man who chooses to disregard those recommendations. They are both going to enjoy life, but one is most likely to die sooner. So keeping the internals clean by changing oil on a regular schedule adjusted to how you use your car is the "Healthy" thing to do.

I am not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday in last night.

If I may add a question as well, are any of you adding some oil to the new filter before installing ?
I fill the filter as much as I can before installing it. Does it help reduce the time before oil flows to the engine on first startup? Maybe. Does this have any effect on engine life? Probably not, it just seems like a good thing to do. ;)

I do it this way, one fill of the filter. Let it sit, oil will wick /soak into the media.

Look into the filter it looks dry. The media is saturated or could be said charged.

As long as the oil life value is good (and it was reset at last change), not much harm can happen if not tracking the car.
