I have Borla S-Type catback (active version using OEM actuators) and the very first cold start made me jump. It initially really barks sharply compared to OEM exhaust (ATAK would be even louder) but quiets down in the same time back as the active OEM. I start in the garage not to wake the locals.
I have the same Borla exhaust and when I start my car in the early morning in quiet mode (in the garage) there is a quick roar and then after a second it quiets down pretty quick. My neighbor across the street has a very loud classic Corvette and his family hasn't complained. 😄

FYI thats not quite correct. On the OEM system, on cold start the valves are fully open no matter what the settings selected. They stay that way and gradually close to the operator selected setting as the cats warm up.
I used to think so, too, but I've been proven wrong. Another forum member has made a video of the valves during startup. They are initially fully open, but they close to the desired setting while the engine is cranking. By the time the engine has started they are already closed. There's nothing gradual about it.
The reason the engine is louder upon a cold start has to do with the cold fueling/timing strategy and the idle speed that's a bit higher. The active exhaust has no part in this; it does its job as expected every time.

I'm curious if blocking the inner tip that's branched off the outer one really does anything, versus just sticking the outer noodle in as far as you can

I think it's an insane idea and I'm gonna take a hard pass on it. Heh. My Coyote F150 also has a fairly loud bark on cold starts. It's the nature of the beast.... When I remote start it in the driveway, there's no question of whether it did or didn't start :p

Also, I have another idea.

i think this is dependent on the type of mufflers/tips you have. in my experience with the roush, ive only been able to jam the noodles in to about the point where the tip itself begins to bottle neck down. so prior to the point where the noodle would get to the welds you see in the pic i posted. therefore, both noodles need to be in the tips. ive had the noodles blow out of the inside tips, meaning there was sufficient back pressure and therefore noise. it's kind of an all or nothing deal- if even one of the 4 tips does not have the noodle in, it will be loud enough to defeat the purpose of using the noodles at all.

i suppose if you had one narrower but longer noodle that you could shove all the way down near the muffler, then yes, you would not need to block off the inside tips that branch off. i had already spent enough time playing around with my noodle and just left it as using one for each tip :cwl: :cwl:

that would be ideal if all my neighbors were car people, but sadly, theyre not. i actually like all my neighbors too, and im surprised i havent had more complaints about it. i just dont want to be an inconsiderate a hole, ha. the initial bark is enough to wake people up, even if it calms down quickly after to a quieter idle, the damage is done with that initial bark. again, i love it personally, but i can fully appreciate why everyone else doesnt and doesnt want to hear it every day at 440 am. even on weekends it's not uncommon for me to be out of the house doing one thing or another at 6 am when some people want to sleep in a bit. pretty simple fix for it though.

maybe this can start a new competition, see who can launch produce out of their exhaust the furthest.

If the Harley d-bags with open pipes can sit and rev in the driveway for no good reason, then I think someone can start up their Mustang to go to work. j/s

Yep. I have found if I push the clutch in and hit start right away, noisy as hell. If I push the clutch in, and wait 2-3 seconds before hitting start button, much quieter. Still loud though with a 8 month old in the bedroom above the garage.

OP, thanks for posting. Going to do this as well even though I still have active exhaust.

totally get that, trust me. i just dont want to add to it. there's already a school across the street that gets deliveries, trucks, extra loud garbage truck pickups, etc that have woken me up countless times. id be lying if i said it didnt annoy me and piss me off. sure, it's part of life, get that, but i dont want to add unnecessarily. also, this is again early morning. im not afraid of making noise later on in the day.

The only way would be to change the axle-back exhaust to have the active valve design.

I didn't opt for this, but I see a ton of people removing factory active exhaust, so I imagine those axle-backs are available all over the place. Not sure how the wiring would work on a car not equipped with it. Maybe some type of manual switch can be fashioned?
