The 2016 GT I just got has BBK long tube headers, high flow cats and an MBRP catback. It is much too loud for my taste. My last 2016 GT came with stock manifolds/cats and a Borla Type-S catback with the Borla resonator. It was a good combo for me but I can't afford $1,700 for one.

I have been thinking about replacing the MBRP catback with the stock resonator and stock mufflers to calm things down a bit but I have been advised that this is not a very good idea give the headers and high flow cats.

I see both Dynomax and Magnaflow have some 3" diameter mufflers that should be much quieter than the MBRP mufflers on the catback now. It looks like I'd have to have a muffler shop do the cutting and welding but that's okay. I also saw another approach where a guy installed 3" resonators in the red circle and another guy that had a pair of some type of small, cylindrical muffler there instead essentially having four mufflers.

I can also just keep my eyes open for someone getting rid of a quieter catback that fits my needs.

Any suggestions?

You could replace the h pipe with a resonator like Acceletec, Borla or Magnaflow. That should tame it a bit.

For me there was no way I could get a reasonable sound level without a center resonator. I run a Magnaflow.. into Borla S-type # cat-back WITH 2 extra Stainless brothers can resonators, and Kooks 1 7/8 long tubes. This was my perfect end result great sound and not obnoxious.

I run Roush axle backs and an X pipe and it's loud. About once a year I'll put t

Putting the resonator back on makes a big difference. I run Roush axle backs and an X Pipe and I'll put the resonator section back on when I tire of the noise.

Corsa offers three inch resonators in a couple different sizes and they weren't too expensive, I chose the smaller version and man did they quiet down the car. I am running full free flowing exhaust and the corsa extreme catback. I was surprised how much they toned down the exhaust. Highly recommend these.

I decided I am going to keep the long tube headers and high flow cats. For my first step in taming the exhaust, I am going to install two 3" inlet/outlet resonators and evaluate the results. If I still don't like it, I will replace the two MBRP mufflers with quieter 3" inlet/outlet mufflers that hopefully calm it down a bit more but still have a bit of aggression to it.

At least that is what I am thinking now. With the car being lowered, I need to make sure I don't lose too much ground clearance with the resonators.

I am quite self-conscious with the exhaust being as loud and shrill and crackly as it is now. It needs to be geezerified at bit.

Be sure to inspect the size of the H-pipe port holes. There are some aftermarket companies that cut a small 1.0”-1.5” dia. port hole then weld in a 2.0”-2.5” dia. Crossover tube. As mentioned, you’ll want at minimum 2.50”-2.75” to max 3.00” cross over to effectively lower the dB’s.

Stock mufflers. They're fine. 0hp to be gained with aftermarket cans
My current but subject-to-change goal is to significantly reduce the sound volume and re-use as much of the existing 3" system as possible. Removing the long tube headers and high-flow cats sounds like a big pain, plus finding a decent set of OEM manifolds with cats and that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is a challenge. That leaves doing something involving the 3" MBRP catback. A pair of 3" resonators somewhere in the yellow circle might be step 1. I looked at using the Vibrant Performance 1142 3" Ultra Quiet Resonators but I am concerned about the ground clearance. Several other 3" resonators were mentioned above. And also find some quieter 3" mufflers that will fit in the space occupied by the MBRP ones. Makes we wonder what the point of keeping the MBRP catback even is if I have to hack to hack it apart to neuter its sound pitch and volume. I could easily be into this for $800.

I'd be fine with losing 20 hp or whatever by replacing the 3" MBRP catback with an OEM 2.5 inch resonator, tailpipes and mufflers if I ended up with a bit more aggressive sound than stock from the long tube headers and high-flows cats being moderated by factory resonator and mufflers. And there are some very inexpensive OEM take-off systems for sale out there just needing a new home.

Maybe I should just remove the MBRP catback as-is, sell it and buy a take-off OEM catback with resonator. Hell, I don't know!

If your existing system is tucked up where it belongs that 1/2” of lost ground clearance by the 4” dia. resonators shouldn’t matter much. If your system is hanging lower than it should you’ll have to be cautious.
How much suspension drop ?

Maybe a high flow inline resonator to reduce the decibel level.
