I figured it's a map file, but you know how it is, you start reading forums and get overwhelmed with info. :)
Is this an okay file? That's what came up for my VIN, but not sure why it says "gen2" or "v1.1" when the version I have is 3.3. So many versions and builds and generations...

OK, I’m not sure what this is so let’s see if someone else knows. If not call Ford.

Indeed the Sync operating system is not intertwined with the map file. It sounds like you need to rest your Sync 3 operating system. I had to do that when I had weird pairing issues with my phone and disabled buttons on the screens. I did a master reset and all was good in the world. Since then I got a Sync 3 update over wifi and now am running Sync 3.3 which has been stable for me. I did a huge map update a few weeks back, which is 1.18. So all is stable and I will run it as is awhile.

When copying map files including license file that were downloaded from Ford side to USB they should be unzipped? Instruction doesn't say unzip files to USB, it just said copy files.

Well Ford has disabled the instructions from the NotMyFord owner's site:

However, I saved them from my valiant attempt to update the maps....

I noticed something similar when I downloaded the Sync update for my car last night. At first when I checked for updates it came out with an actual Sync 3 version number. Then when I hit download to USB it switched to "gen2 v1.7". It kept showing that text every time I checked for updates. However, when I checked back again this morning it went back to the Sync 3 version number. I downloaded that and compared the files in the different downloads and saw that they were the same. I installed the update this morning.

So all is good? I'm about to do the SYNC one and then the map one about now.

Did you unzip files to USB or you just copy zip files?

Start with page 4 of the Download Instructions I attached above. It is more than unzipping the file.

I have both instructions and followed it to the teeth. My question is very simple, do the files need to be unzipped in USB? I'm asking because I'm getting "Installation Failed Error Code PKG_ERR03"

There could be various reasons for that error.

Did you format your USB as exFAT?
USB is 3.0?
Using WinZip? (assuming your pc is Windows)

The instructions specify WHICH file to unzip and which to just copy to the USB. There are three pages of instructions to create the file package. So it is not a simple question.

Last, if all attempts fail, the download may be corrupt and you may need to contact Ford to try again.

yes it was formatted to exFAT. I contacted Ford and they send me direct link for download. Still it's not working. BTW I'm in IT so I know what I'm doing. I think license file is incorrect

FYI for those of you with older cars, I just updated my 2016 Tech Pack to Sync 3.4.20136 and Maps 1.9 using CyanLabs.

Their installer is very easy to use in order to create the proper USB thumb drive for this purpose.

The update pauses for long periods of time where it looks like it’s hung, but you just have to be patient. Mine took 25 min.

So here is something interesting. I'm on the phone with Ford CS now trying to get a download of 1.19. I'm also on Ford Owner. Look what comes up what i checked for an update on my wife's 2018 Escape with 3.0.......

I have installed the SYNC update yesterday. It was a weird file called that what I've listed above (for my VIN), I've had 3.3 build 18xxx, but after this file (yes, name weird Gen2 whatever) was installed via flash drive, my SYNC has updated to 3.3 build 19052, which from my understanding on this thread is the newest you can have right now (with 3.3 that is).
My maps are being installed as we speak, hate having to let the car idle, but don't have anywhere to drive anyway (thanks covid).

Still debating the 3.4, am scared, but the modern look and mainly AA directions in the cluster + long 18-station ribbon (instead of 3 six-station ribbons) on the audio intrigue me like crazy. Enough to mess with warranty, that I don't know. View attachment 483760
