Agreed- for the 2016, the most reasonable upgrade is the console USB connector swap that allows Software Version 3.0 to be installed. Get your AA or CP going and call it a day.
Jim, didn’t the pre CP 2016 cars still have Sync 3. I thought it was a build update to get it.

The 2016 models with the smaller 4” screens had Sync w My Ford Touch.
Think Track, R, and Base.

Sync3 is only mentioned for the Tech here:

My Tech came with the larger 8” screen and Sync 3 but not Software Version 3.0. from the factory, it did not support AA and CP.

I needed to swap out the USB in the console to get the system to accept Sync 3 ver 3.0- sounds crazy...

Just checked the Ford Owners site- apparently I can update to Sync3 ver3.0.20204. Might do it for giggles but I won’t expect anything earth shattering.

I appreciate all these comments on 2016 Sync3, but my 2016 Track Pack came with a 4" screen. I upgraded twice and it now has a 2018 electronics set - APIM, ACM, FCIM, USB Hub, etc. Oasis shows my car as equipped with this setup, so I get automatic WIFI OTA software updates and I can buy map updates from Ford's supplier as well. I'd give up Ford's support if I switched to 3.4 - in effect, I'd go from minimal support to none at all. And, in reading about 3.4, other than it perhaps running a bit faster, there didn't seem to be much difference for cars that don't have the big wide OLED dashboard.

So, as things stand, I'm on the latest 3.0 software with the latest maps. CarPlay and Android Auto both work great over a USB cable.

One of the drawbacks of installing all this updated kit in a car that was built with a 4" screen is that the climate controls don't work very well because the car is missing some sensors and actuators. So, I installed the missing sensors and actuators and climate control works great now and there are no DTC's on any of the car's systems.

Keep in mind that although the version hasn’t changed there have been many build updates over the years.
True but nothing of any real improvement.

I didn't have to swap out the console usb and was able to upgrade to Sync 3.0, however if wanting Car play would have to change the usb. AA does work with the usb under the 8inch screen

It’s like you’re in a whole ‘nother country....

I never looked into the AA aspect - just wanted CP and I couldn’t get the upgrade without the USB.

I presume you got your screen working again? If the answer is yes, and you are out of warranty you can safely update using Cyanlabs. Just read, and reread the instructions and you'll be fine.
