might as well do it all while you're in there. People have broken crank gear.
How many?
I made a post on here a week or two asking that question and all I can find is one.
Also what causes the crank gear to break? Is it the same thing that causes the OPG to fail? I dont believe it to be the same but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone have experience to explain was causes the crank gear to break? I have heard shocking the system...but idk for sure.

Have you seen how thin the factory timing sprocket is at the keyway? I'm surprised they hold up on stock motors.

Interesting choice....I'm leaning this way. What made you go this route?
I was going to do both while I was having my motor built. Livernois had responded to one of my comments about definitely doing OPG but they didn't think CS was necessary since there hasn't been as much reporting of them failing like OPG's. I was looking to save as much as I could at the time (here come the small investment for a $6k motor comments) but, at that time in my budget the $300 mattered because of other priorities. So, I opted just to do OPG for the time being. So far so good. I will be doing CS in the spring time before taking it back to the race track. This car isn't going to see much love since winter is coming and i'm in the process of building an '86 coupe.

With all the failures over the years why do people still question it? It's $500 in parts to save an 8k motor....Just do it for piece of mind.

$$$ is the answer
$900 in parts if you do a damper also. Labor is the kicker.
I see people in FL doing installs for $350. Around here the cheapest I can find is $1200...labor only! I do not have the means or place to install myself unfortunately. So total package over 2k.

Agreed labor is the kicker for me its not that the parts are expensive. The sum total makes me question just buying a built shortblock with the gears and doing that. Then I can really pulley down on the D1 and have a greater peace of mind.

Probably will run the D1 very conservative for this year and into next and hope it holds on. If not the plan always was built shortblock.

so i'm new to the coyote world and am extremely glad I came across this forum board as I hadn't ever heard anything with the OPG's prior to picking up my car. anyone know any reliable shops around here (southwestern PA) to perform the surgery? i'm pretty mechanically sound but have never worked on a mustang so i'd prefer to leave it to an expert on this.

only OPG (MMR), stock Timing gear

I would do them both, the timing gear is also made of powdered metal and is week, so if that's goes it will crash all the pistons and valves. The timing gear or crank gear has to come off when doing the OPG instal.

If I was to be asked this 6 mon ago I would have voted no and not planning on doing it. I was in th camp and always defending in threads it's not needed for street cars and such. Well carma's a bitch b cause my OPG failed Aug 20 and spun 2 rod bearing. I've been working at getting my car back on the road since, and with no warranty it's out of pocket. So far I'm at $5100 for a long block and the MMR OPG and crank heat plus ATI damper. Don't risk it boys take my word for it:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Boundry OPG and TSS TG. I chose this route over the optional Roush warranty.

Quick question for those that have done this installation.

I'm going to get my opg and cs installed at the end of the week but I wanted to do a oil change either today or tomorrow before I make the trip. Should I wait to do the oil change after the opg's are done or before? Just asking since idk if any oil is wasted during the install.

I'd just wait and change the oil after everything is buttoned up. You'll lose a little bit of oil but I'd be more wearey of contamination. I know I got a small amount of coolant in my oil pan when I did mine. Not enough to cause catastrophic failures right away but I certainly wouldn't want to drive around with contaminated oil for an entire oil change interval.

I'll be getting opg/cs done soon, I'm doing a wastegate, eboost2 setup, tune and some gagues so I'll be getting them done for piece of mind. Dont need it to break on the dyno at 14psi. I'm getting it done by psi proformane great shop. They haven't told me an exact price yet. but they said it's not that big of a deal so when I hear back tomorrow I'll post the price.

Changing the oil is part of the install.

trust me, I know the feels of putting out of pocket for a new motor. Took me $6k to get my engine back up after rod bearing failure. I knew the car wouldn't be driven at all since I was headed overseas, so I just did OPG and saved that money since I needed it at the time.

I'd agree and recommend both to anyone who can do them. If you're paying for labor, do both. My engine was built by a local shop so the whole thing was already apart. I spent extra money on APR head Studs, opted for the Manley H Beam rods to go along with the Wiseco Pistons and sacrificed keeping the timing gear for now during the build. I will do the Timing Gear will be done before spring rolls around, and it the lesser of two evils to swap out and I can easily do it at my house. That's the way I justified it to myself lol. I'm just putting out what my experience was/has been so far only doing OPG, not saying to neglect the TG in anyway
