I'm preparing my 2016 GT for a supercharger and I'm going to be upgrading the OPG/CS to billet pieces. I've been researching these parts and the various options for the past few weeks and some of the info I'm seeing is very concerning.

It seems like some of you have been experiencing clearance issues with MMR gears and even the Boundary/TSS gears. After hearing this, I'm considering these options.

1. Go with the slightly more expensive TSS gears and hope for clearances within spec. Based on what I've read these seem to be the most consistent.

2. Go with the Ford Performance gears which I would hope are the most reliable.

3. Get a brand new oil pump from Ford Performance with the billet gears already inside. I can get this for $700 elswhere

What option would you guys say is the safest?

I went with the Ford pump loaded with billet gears for my 19. If you chose to go the aftermarket route, do yourself a favor and get a new pump housing as well.

Thanks. Yea I saw some videos on youtube of guys putting aftermarket gears in a used pump housing that was very scored up. Will likely just get the new ford housing with their billet gears.

Also any suggestion for crank sprocket? I know the ford oil pump is just the gears and the pump

There's an entire thread on the matter concerning Boundary and it covers a lot of information but it's well worth the read.

I'm just SPECULATING, but I suspect the FP gears are harder than the aftermarket variants.

The issue largely groups into 4 quadrants:

Tight tolerances yield better pump pressures, but make the gears less forgiving to vibrational loads and shocks. So tight = good for flow = bad for durability

Hard (Rockwell) gears make for long lasting but brittle and unforgiving gears.

Hard = doesn't wear easily = doesn't yield much before failure

So essentially you end up with

Hard and Tight (flows well, will last a long time before spalling or degrading and will shatter fail)
Hard and Loose (doesn't flow as well, will last a long time and will shatter fail)
Soft and Tight (Flows well, won't last as long but resists brittle shattering)
Soft and loose (flows less, won't last as long but resists brittle shattering).

These aftermarket materials and sets are meant for "race" applications where the motor sees much more frequent maintenance and replacement. They're softer so they're more forgiving to vibe shocks but they'll mar and spall and wear fast.

So if you want THE MOST risk protection, soft and loose.

If you want the MOST FLOW with some protection (but replacement at some point) go Soft and Tight

If you want Most durability, with less flow, hard and loose.

If you want OEM, hard and tight.

As with most things, there's no answer to all prayers. A geroter type gear to pump oil isn't exactly the best design in the world. A vane style external pump on a belt drive would probably be more complicated and more expensive, but would also be much kinder to the motor if it fails.

For me, I plan on buying the FP Pump assembly, just to ensure everything is fresh, new, and tight within Specs. The Oil Pump is just to important to skimp on. Good Luck

I've ran Boundary for a while with a bunch of low 9sec passes. Chewed up and scored badly (pics in my build thread). Appeared too soft for the application in my untrained opinion. Now running Ford Performance gear with quite a bit of low 8 sec passes. FP says forged units produced by oem manufacturer. I pulled them recently to inspect, look perfect!!!!

I'm doing FI upgrade this coming fall. In my past of building engines, I always replaced the assembly's as a unit when possible, Not just the internal gearing, IE oil pumps, fuel pumps ETC.
Good luck.
