So how do you explain the tick and 2K rattle in my 2016? It's a gen 2 that has steel liners not plasma.
Because the tick has nothing to do with the PTW liners. People need something to blame and on the 18+ engines this is it.

I thought piston slap was a tolerance issue on older ford 5.0’s in SUV’s etc. with the stay running hot alternating cylinder engine program.
Ford replaced an engine for me on an older expedition due to this. It rattled like hell when cold but lessened when warmed up.

Yup, that's it. It sounds exactly like all of the YouTube videos I've watched of "tick" and/or "piston slap" on 2018 - 2020 5.0's (gen 3). That's why I'm perplexed everytime this is identified as a gen 3 only issue.

I chalk it up to cavitation as the tick changes or goes away with the high pressure oil pump. Other manufacturers have exact same sound too.

The tick is not new, has been a plague for the mustang since like 2011. Just commonly known and spread around like corona virus since 2018+
Every engine builders that works on mustang specific or dyno tuner will tell you this. It don't mean your engine is bad or will blow up

Its a very noisy mechanic in the 1st place. Some have more sensivity in the ear and can put a plaster on everything they hear
And you have somes who just start the car and don't care at all, not even noticing a single difference between a ticking engine and one that don't.

Mine is not ticking at all, but i have heard from (MANY) that after my first oil change this is when the engine gets so loud you think something is going wrong with it. And it will be dependant on what brand of oil and grade your going to pour inside it. Because ya it makes a huge difference. (Thats why i stay far from 5w50)

And for those who thinks running 87 octane into a 12:1 compression engine is a genius thing, And say that its nothing related to the tick. Okai read throughly what i will type in below

This gen3 have 4 knock sensors, very well placed to detect any detonating inside your combustion chamber. Yes your pcm will retard timing (more than it needs to) and recover really slow until it finds the sweet spot it likes. Dosn't mean before your sensors caught it up that you made 0 damage to the piston or rings. And if the bad is alreydy done, you may just endure it as it is. You won't be going back in the past

The spec ford 460 is only produced on 93!,whatever everyone says. HUGE difference between 87/93 you have no ideas how much timing it will pull back. Your getting 27-27.5 from 93 and you will go as low in the retardment as 20 degrees on 91. Now just imagine your silly 87 octane. Think its not creating damage ? ahah sure your pocket loves it but your engine don't.

Now damage to piston and rings can create what you commonly refer as ticking. And this is why im trying to teach those hard headed guys the only undeniable truth around this. DON'T CHEAP OUT FOR 10$ OF FUEL. Just pour premium in and have yourself less problem into your life.

And for those skeptical who still think im retarded, just go your way and don't read what i type. Because i might have saved many engine from this post. No matter what your thinking of me

No one knows what the rattle is on the Gen 3 much less some Youtubers and it has not been confirmed as piston slap. There are many theories and I have one or 2 of my own which doesn't include slap. That said the Gen 2 does not have any rattle characteristics that I've seen reported so it would seem your situation is rather unique and maybe should be looked into just in case.

No one knows what the rattle is on the Gen 3
My opinion for what it's worth, that rattle sounds exactly like the 1000's of engines throughout the years. Cold piston slap. And as I said before, I'd be warranty that real quick.

As soon as I got my 18 GT home I changed the oil to Mobile 1 Euro 0W40 and again at 1000 miles. I also bought the Ford kit to change the AC stretchy belt to an idler pulley set up from LMR. So far I have no issues with engine tick or knock. I also use 87 octane but I don’t track it but do have fun with it on the road. I am not advising anyone to do what I have done but just stating what I did to attempt to avoid engine noise. I only have 4K miles on it but so far so good.

Its not just cold it is the same when warm hence why i dont believe its piston slap. I think it could be the transition from port injection to DI from the HPFP ramping up. But who knows.

You really should be using the highest octane you can at the pump, the cost savings of using 87 aren't worthwhile especially if you live in a hot climate or it's summer in a northern climate. The car will pull crazy levels of timing as the guy above said. I don't think it will cause damage but it will just make shit for power.

Also, I get why people are concerned about engine noises, but I've noticed that the majority of newer DI engines from all brands are just noisy as hell. My VW 2.0 was clattery and there was nothing wrong with it.
