I would hope that anyone out there who feels their rights were infringed upon would look at the big picture and realize that this is a state of emergency. Had we not done what we did, the story would be much worse.
Mitigation of the pandemic is certainly a worthy and just cause, even if it includes, for a period of time, sacrificing ones social liberties for the greater good. Sensible measures to achieve a positive outcome to get us back to some version of normality is a good thing.

However, for some politicians, this crisis presents itself as an opportunity to influence government intervention and overreach where it has no place or purpose.

Mandating that citizens are forbidden to travel to their own property in their state, or ordering the National Guard to go door-to-door to shake down New Yorkers, is way beyond the pale IMO.

It is these types of crisis's that bring about significant societal change that can, and have, lead to historical despair.

Again, I follow the guidance and am respectful of such, but I am very concerned about the political and societal influences that will remain long after the virus is defeated.

Between Gretchen from Michigan (where I spent most of my life) and Gina from Rhode Island, government over-reach is becoming more invasive than the virus.

I have opined, and still maintain, that the outcome of this pandemic on our democracy will be much more severe than the illness.

Thoughts on this from someone who lives in Michigan.....

  • The only complaints I’ve been hearing about this so far come from people on the internet who are not from Michigan
  • At this point the only thing Gov. Whitmer has done that has brought out the pitchforks is deemed landscaping services as non-essential businesses. Several mayors and police chiefs have already said “yeah, we’re not enforcing that one”
  • Speaking of enforcement, it is very clear that there is no logical way to enforce this, so it really turns out to be an impolite ask.

Actually, there is one logical way to “enforce” this. If you’re heading north on I-75 in your Escalade towing your boat or a trailer with quad-cycles, then you’re probably not on your way to or from Kroger. But that would be a special kind of stupid during this pandemic and you would have earned the ticket. The ticket is $1,000 if I’ve heard it right.

This virus will most likely kill between 1.5-3% of the worlds population.

This virus will most likely bankrupt Ford and the other automakers. Looking for a global depression after that.

You car will most likely be built on time baring Chinese made sensors or parts that have supply chain disruptions in the next couple weeks.

I think people will understand soon enough how bad this is.
You are so wrong on the mortality figures. Sorry but I work with pathogenic disease all the time, and this talk is non sense. Do you have any idea the figures if 3% of the world died from it? Wed have to be loosing 10's of thousands of people a day.

Fear mongering does nothing, it's actually mortality rate will never truly be known because of the millions of people who had mild symptoms.

I had it the virus- it was no different for me than a mild cold.

Please dont interject claims based off of no experience in medicine, or pathogenic research and stay off CNN

While the virus is serious to some the manipulation of the data is astounding. Earlier this week the CDC admits that many of the deaths included in the death counts may not of actually died of Corvid-19, now we hear that over 90% of those who did die of the virus had serious underlying conditions that likely played a much larger part in their death. Then we hear that we are experiencing a rather low death count for non Corvid 19 than prior seasons, flu or virus related deaths. Do we see a trend here. Open the Country back up on May 1st with a very strong warning to those in the high risk group to follow the present CDC recommendations.

And the reason for the low statistic overall is that people have for the most part obeyed the requests of the CDC. But then there was NYC, they didn't adhere to a lot of the recommendations. Look what happened to them.

This virus is highly infectious and if people go about business as usual, the curve that has flattened, will go right back up.

Sure open the country back up.

So just because NYC is having a bigger problem that is reason to destroy the lives and financial well being of the entire rest of the Country? You must have one of those jobs where you are paid the same whether at work or sitting at home right? Millions don't have that benefit, they have lost their jobs and may never get them back. Those who are at extreme high risk can volunteer to follow the present guidelines until they feel it's safe!

Agree to disagree.

So it comes down to lives vs money I guess. I think I have a good feeling where you are at.

How ironic to loose more people to suicide and murder/suicide because they were financially ruined because of the Covid 19 shutdown than from covid 19 itself. Somehow I doubt we will hear about those numbers.

Moon: I'm no virologist, (and I ain't no friggin' entomologist, <grin>..love that word) but seriously...

If they open the country up completely on May 1st, I'm afraid Tom is correct and in no time, the curve would spike up HARD and stay there. I don't think you want to see millions more Americans die but I have an understanding of how difficult it may be for some.

We can't, (and they won't,) open it up by the 1st of May. That could easily be a death sentence for the country.

WM: That is certainly a consideration but the economy has held on and it's not like '29 so there's time for anyone to bail if they choose. But this isolation could lead to many suicides by those who suffer from Major Depression.

That said, if social distancing isn't maintained, my guess is through June at least, then there will be WAY more COVID-19 deaths than suicides.

I'd rather keep both numbers as low as possible and to my way of thinking, "SD'ing" and dramatically expanded rapid testing, are the keys to achieving those goals.
