despite the max power disadvantage, I would think the '16 trans ratios to be advantageous. It's definitely more FUN to row the narrower gear spacing even if it's not actually faster.
0-60 means dick but I guess you already know that

Now do a 2018 GT compared to a 2024 GT, both autos

Heck a 2021 GT M6 isn't much faster than a 2016 GT M6
@robvas hit something I think isn't identified frequently enough. The early manual trans ratios are WAY better than the later MT82 D4 ratios. My 2016 GT is a PP car (3.73 gear) with the early MT82 (proper ratios), Ford Performance PP3 (+37hp advertised) and some creative exhaust work and tuning from me. If you just add the numbers up and ignore my exhaust and tuning I'm at 472hp. Thats only 12hp up from the stock "18 I test drove and it's no comparison in how they drive. My '16 will bury a stock '18+ M6 car. If you buy a '18+ M6 car because you think they are faster, you might me mistaken. '15-'17 cars can be a bargain, take the price difference and do a few mods and the early car will be faster for the same total spend.

Yah I know the late A10 cars are fast in a straight line, but for manual trans cars, the margin between early and late cars is thinner than most people think.

Why are we comparing the cars? Why is the mustang the benchmark to a very specific set of desires for sports car transportation?

To me these are two different kinds of cars with different buyers and expectations. albiet not that much different, they are both sporty but there are SUV's faster then a GT and Im not gonna start comparing for the same reasons I wont compare vettes/gt's etc

Very very different cars. Hard to really compare. This might sound a bit nuts but if you are after a good looking, ultra practical daily driver that rocks off the line with a quick 0-60….buy a Tremor with the eco boost and the front Torsen option and leave it in sport mode. I can consistently get low 5’s in sport mode. Torque vectoring AWD and turbos makes for a great launch. Butt dyno says it’s punchier than a GT500 the instant you hit the pedal (obviously that is a brief thing once you get traction in a 500) Lots of grip accelerating out of corners too. Off road suspension helps with body roll…it’s basically a sport truck. Might as well just track it. 🤣

Edit: This is a bit tongue in cheek. But it is seriously quick in a straight line for a full size truck. I’ve even giggled a bit because you just don’t expect it from something so large and when the turbos kick in, it reminds me of past AWD BMWs.

One of the worst takes I've seen on here.

For one they are different classes of cars. The corvette serves a different purpose to most owners than a mustang (hence why there is a camaro to compete with the mustang).

Also the corvette kicks ass. The c6 is still a great car. The c6 zo6 is a great drivers car that has a manual and you can make crazy fast and still stay n/a. C7 generation has new tech, more hp out of the box and still has a manual option.

C8 switched directions so that it could compete with the modern sports cars and super cars. Everyone wants 0-60 times so they put the engine in the rear to help compete. Yes they did drop the manual option. The c8 zo6 is a crazy cool car with a sick engine. The c8 zr1 is a 1000+hp monster that will probably be faster in a straight line and a track than any production ford you could buy (and there is still a car coming that will be faster).

Yes they are expensive, yes they dropped the manual option for a c8, and yes the c8 looks more like a super car than a muscle car. Still sick cars that has a generation and engine/trans option that can make anyone happy.

I echo everyone else here, they’re different cars so doesn’t make much sense to compare them. Maybe you compare the C8 and GT500, but even then, they’re just different cars.

Also, C7 > C8 > ZL1. I’ll die on that hill

Not to mention the E-Ray with the ProCharger: https://www.motortrend.com/news/2024-chevrolet-c8-corvette-hybrid-e-ray-procharger-supercharger/.

My BIL has one and I enjoy driving it but I’d never have one for a daily.

used c8 is so expensive you may as well buy new and even a used c7 is going for a bit less than a brand new mustang gt while being only a little bit faster and having zero practicality as a daily driver.

Im just going to wait until they make the mustang GT significantly faster and buy that.
If I fit into a Corvette, I'd still own a C5. I loved the handling of my C5 Z06. Just not enough headroom. The other downsides are they are getting old, and you will want to modify it to get the power you want. Upside is they are cheap and REALLY light. Any of the newer V8 GM engines will fit, and with the car weighing ~3,100 lbs you don't need a lot of power for the car to be quick.

C5s actually feel sporty when you drive them. C7s feel muscular. I haven't driven a C8 - I don't really want one since you can't get a manual transmission.

edit: but I think you are right and a modified Mustang GT is a pretty good way to go. Or a Camaro 6 gen isn't bad in my opinion either.

The problem with corvettes right now is the idiots that bought them over sticker since 2020 still think they can get the premium they paid back in resale. And that's floated downstream to the c7's. Not to mention significant c8 transmission reliability concerns, with non transferrable warranty. Another 6 months or so before reality sets in for that market.
LMFAO…

the above isn’t just Corvette owners - hell, even S550 owners (on all platforms) seem to think they too can still make bank when that ship sailed 3 years ago….
🤣

OP only compared the price. For some buyers, the only requirement is “fun” and the biggest constraint is “cost”. Not unreasonable to see if there’s another shiny toy relatively in the S550’s price range.

Can confirm all of this, but we digress.

Just wait. Brand new C8s were selling sticker price not long ago, but now you see $11K below the sticker. Soon, used market prices will go lower. Just came back from Ron Fellow's Performance Driving School for Corvette owners, and I learned C8 is a race car (I will not call it a senior's car any more). However, I must say I love driving my GT 6MT more, and it's exhaust note cannot be beat.
