Cooled seats not cooling

Today, from a guy on the F150 forum who worked with Ford engineers on the fix and asked Ford about the Mustang seats -

Sounds like the Mustang TSB is close but not ready for release just yet. It sounded like it isn't far off. I think Mustang owners can take a deep breath knowing a fix is coming and that the F150 fix has shown improvement over the stock setup.

The engineers he worked with are the ones responsible for the seats across multiple lines. If he said they have a fix in the works then I believe him. I don't understand why Ford doesn't put a notice in OASIS though to let the dealers know of the issue and the pending solution. Would save a lot of frustration with people bringing the issue up with the dealer only to be told its functioning as designed.

Agree it sounds very promising and likely to happen. IIRC the oasis notice for the F150 popped up about a month b4 the tsb/fix released so hopefully oasis soon and tsb next month ...

This is the first time I've gotten any direct acknowledgement, from a Ford representative, that there's even a problem, never mind an indication that a fix is in the works, including from your Facebook colleague half a day ago. All I've gotten previously is the condescending nonsense that "they're working as designed". When can we expect to see this solution?

If I sound aggravated, here, it's not with you and your colleagues, but rather with Ford's generally unacceptable handling of this issue to date.

I understand, RubyRed15. I don’t have any dates to when the fix will come, but rest assured I'll let you guys know when it's shared. Please know the fix for the F-150 is not a one size fits all, so it can’t just be transferred to our Mustang community.

That is most encouraging and if it pans out it will be kudos to Ford for responsiveness.

I will take you up on this as soon as there is a TSB. My dealer was not very interested in the GT brake fix until I had a TSB to wave at him, then they did really well. I'll do the same here.

A little update, on my 2016 it seems like the seat coolers are intermittent. Today after my lunch break I could feel the upper seat back getting cool (my back was a little sweaty) but after about 15 minutes it stopped.

Still not feeling it heat up as others have noticed, but so far I've only felt the seat backs cool twice since I picked the car up two days ago.

That's the typical way the seat backs operate as described by may here. They might produce cooling for about 15 minutes, then they stop and don't necessarily heat up. That's how mine operate. Even though they don't cool, the fan still blows air, so if you're sweaty it may still feel like they are still cooling some.

The backs on my seats definitely heat up after a while, but I live in FL and it's hot. Specially with a black car & black leather. Which is one of the reasons I went premium to begin with, seat coolers.

Crossing my fingers that the TSB addresses this.

Maybe I'm just special, but if i turn the cooled seats on first thing when i get into the car in the summer, I can DEFINTELY feel the backs heat up. As in, almost to the point of scalding. It's bad.

Right there with ya but In Texas. The seat coolers are the reason I didn't get the Recaros :headbonk:

Sometimes they heat up so much that I have to turn them off.

The ability to cool is based on the temperature of the hot side of the TED. If the car has been sitting in the Houston sun on a 100F day, the interior may have gotten up to 130F. The cooled air blowing out of the seat my thus be 110F. Even worse, the hot side will start to heat up more and the temperature of the cool side will similarly go up.

If, instead, you drive out from a 90F garage into the 100F day. Your cooled air will start off at more like 70F...

It's been mentioned before, I believe, that the cause of the hot spot in the seat is the fan on the blower unit being starved for air. The back of the fan is exposed metal that's pressed right up against the seat and when it can't get enough air (preferably cool), it gets quite hot. Opening up the bottom flap on the seat seems to help.

I think it's been confirmed that the TED is set to cool the air around 14-16°F. Not sure why they don't give it more power especially since when you use it in heat mode it can warm the are considerably more. In an old Navigator service guide someone had posted, it list the warming capacity to be 72-108°F (which seems awfully high). In the Navigator, which seems to follow the same basic settings as newer systems, it list the system using 7.5 amps when in heat mode and only 4.5 amps when cooling. It also indicates that the units switch into lower power mode after 12 minutes of operation which might be a partial cause for those losing cooling after 15 minutes.
