Batteries at Costco are quite reasonably priced if you are a member. I can't speak to their longevity yet as I've had mine less than a year.
For the BMS reset. I used my scan tool. But I have read that simply shutting and locking the car and leaving it untouched for 8 hours will allow the car to determine the battery condition.
The 8 hour thing does indeed allow the car to determine the battery condition, but the BMS reset tells it the battery is new. Two different parameters used to determine the charging strategy for the alternator.

My car is 10 years old ( how did that happen) and I bought a battery about 5 years at Advance Auto. Probably need a new one soon :(

I didn't have to do a reset. Is that with newer Mustangs ?

You live in LA. The heat will kill a battery in 3-5 years. Just get whatever battery works with your bank account. Unless your willing to spend a pretty penny, they are all basically the same.

All S550’s have the BMS, so yes you would need to do the reset

I replaced my battery about a year ago. I didn’t do this reset because I didn’t know about it. Should I do it now, or just leave it be?

But I pulled the battery out of the car, drove my other car to Advance Auto with the old battery, bought a new one and gave them my old one. Then I went home and put the battery in my Mustang. Started it up and that was it. I didn't do a reset.

Probably just leave it at this point unless it starts acting weird. The reset tells the charging system that you have a new battery

The system reset tells the system that you have a new battery. The car should still pick up on battery charge levels, but the reset is basically saying to the charging system to start from scratch because a new battery is in. That’s my understanding of how the system works

My thoughts are the old battery was probably 5 years old, the new one about a year. I d do the re set. Don t see how it will hurt anything.

Ford has been using a Battery Monitoring System for several years before the S550 was introduced. I'm not sure when it started but my '12 Edge has it and needs to be reset with a new battery.
Having said that, not resetting the BMS is not the end of the world. The car will adjust the charging strategy as it learns the new battery's state of charge. Doing a BMS reset simply tells the car to start from scratch with the charging strategy. As part of that strategy the the cars computer keeps track of the age of the battery but age is only a small part of the strategy and doesn't really have a significant effect on the life of the battery.

So it's not necessary to reset the battery because I didn't and that was 5 years ago. My car is fine.

That is correct.
I didn't know anything about BMS the first time I changed the battery in my Edge. It didn't seem to have any effect at all on how the car worked or on battery longevity. I have done it on every car since I learned about BMS because you're "supposed to" but I can't say that I noticed any difference.

I don’t know if it’s as advanced as the VW stuff where the BCM would tell the alternator to up the amperage as the battery aged so it would always be fully charged. Problem with that is you had to program the car to give the battery a “new” serial number to drop the charging down to original levels or it would fry the new battery.
