You can buy the H5 (47) AGM and it will work fine and provide more cranking power than stock.
Fits stock tray, everything?

From what I'm reading the H5(47) has the same foot print (within 1/16") and is 5/8"-3/4" taller, posts on the same side and 50-60 more CCA.
A poster in another thread says it causes a very slight bulge in the cover But apparently not enough to be an issue. He also said Costco has the H5 AGM for $185. Something I'm going to keep in mind when mine goes.

QUESTION
Can the stock battery box be modded to make the 48 series battery fit? Length, Height and Width?

Doubt it, considering the 48 battery is larger.

Our standard Group 96R allows for maximum dimensions of 9.5" x 6.9375" x 6.9375" (https://www.batteryequivalents.com/...d-recommendations.html?highlight=WyI5NnIiXQ==).
The Group 48 allows for maximum dimensions of 11" x 6.875" x 7.5" (https://www.batteryequivalents.com/...-dimensions-features-and-recommendations.html).

You would need to dremel more than one side to make it fit, it seems. Unless you can get away with squeezing it in. I don't think the existing clamp would allow it to fit.

Edit: Found a more appropriate document, straight from BCI themselves: https://batterycouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/BCI-Group-Sizes.pdf

Max defined heights (L x W x H)
Group 96R: 242 x 175 x 175 mm
Group 48: 278 x 175 x 190 mm

@dirtwarrior Depending on what battery you pick, you should be able to fit it into the OEM box, as long as you dremmel out enough space on the side facing the engine bay (longer length). Looks like the width should remain the same.

It would be wonderful if you could post a link to a 96R AGM battery with 700CCA. I, and I'm sure many others, would be all over that.
Best I could find is one that claims 600 CCA

I bought this as well, to clear the air it is rated @ 600 CCA, 700 CA. Car is always on a battery tender and is a weekend cruiser (if that). Also, fit perfect in the stock tray w/cover.
We'll see how long it holds up, the stock battery lasted about 4-1/2 years, died of old age I guess :).

I'm sure most know this but in case anyone is curious CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is the amount of current draw the battery is capable of at 0 degrees F before the battery voltage drops below 7.2V. CA (Cranking Amps) is the same thing but measured at 32 degrees F.

As an aside, if you get an AGM battery check that any charger or maintainer is compatible. They use a different strategy to charge.

My concern with the stock is it may leak and cause rust... Considered preemptively replacing it with an AGM. TBH, I'd probably end up with the Motorcraft AGM, but this one looks interesting. Don't think I'm gonna try to go bigger. Kind of a hassle and not sure I need it.

If you are still following, where is the battery vent tube routed to?
Is venting needed for an AGM battery? And is there a vent tube on the stock battery? I’ve removed my battery and there isn’t one on my 22 or my friend’s 20.

I’ll be attempting this swap over the next few days. I have the S650’s tray, just need to figure out exactly how to mount it to my S550. Battery is an XS Power D4800.

Op, any shot you have photos of mods to the box or of the spacers you made?

I was surprised at how much better the Jegs pricing was than Crutchfield’s - I usually make big purchases there to build up points and for their tech support.

You also threw this in an S550? How’d it go? I’m doing the install as I type this out. I had to slightly trim the tubes at the bottom of the S650 tray but I can now get it in. I’m going to enlarge the mounting holes and reevaluate.

I'd say main reason the S650s went to the 48AGM really has more to do with the addition of stop/start not so much battery cranking abilities. Ford started using AGMs when stop/start was introduced into their vehicle line ups. My old company car was 17 Escape SE 1.5L 4 cyl. with stop/start that required a 48AGM, my F150 with 5.0L and stop/start requires an AGM, my non start stop 23 Mach, FLA 96R.
