we have a couple cases of engines we've fixed with broken opgs, i personally have broken a couple sprockets before the billet were available

CS?CS is the primary weakness in the 15 and up, OPGs just make sense to knock out if you’re in there but those are weak too. We’ve personally seen 15+ CS’s damaged on N/A cars who road race and or drag race. F/I it’s a no brainer, especially on Superchargers with the extra strain on the crank. Which cars are running 9’s without them? And how many? Don’t discount not needing them based off less than 1% of the cars when these breaking is a normal thing.
I have to ask...why not start with a better balancer first? Do those not help at all with the harmonics that end up killing OEM gears especially when just remaining NA?if i hadn't done a built shortblock, first thing i would have done would be to change the opg's, i always have always will on my personal vehicles.
and yes, as i had mentioned, your gonna need to pull the oil pan on the 18

It's alot cheaper and easier to replace those and it fixes the problem at the source, not a bandaid fix.
That makes even more sense.my car has opgs, sprocket, and a balancer, all of mine always do
Thanks. I had seen talk of the OPG being a weakness, but this is the first time I ran across "CS" as a weakness.Crank sprocket
Keep in mind forums are sorta like one big info-commercial. If it’s for sale, there will be someone who does there best to say what it takes to make you think you need it. It’s pretty hard to find any non vendors that say they’ve seen broken OPGs and CS gears. I think in the last few years I’ve only seen one “regular Joe” on this forum break theirs.

Well put. I however do have a supercharger, but I never bounced it off the rev limiter (mine is set at 7,200rpm's), I'm not flooring it at every stop sign and red light or taking it to a 1/4 mile strip. (Not that there is anything wrong with that stuff, if that's your thing, it's all good). So far, I'm doing fine. If I was to treat the car like a rented mule and beat the sh*t out of it, then I would probably upgrade them.I don't think the vendors are trying to scare tactic anyone into buying their products. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to sell those parts. Many people have broken them for a variety of reasons. I have been working on cars for over 25yrs so I am not giving advice without experience. If you want to have the most protection from wrecking your motor due to broken OPG or CS then replace them with better units. If you are doing any of the following then you should more strongly consider them:
1. Shifting above 8000rpm
2. Hitting the rev limiter (the less the better)
3. Loading the crank (Supercharger)
I still feel that even with the above most cars will live a long life if tuned properly, parts are installed properly and the rev limiter is not being bounced against repeatedly. The rev limiter is probably the most important one on the list. A better crank dampner can help but only if it is installed properly. Neither of my coyote stangs have had upgraded OPG or CS for a combined 15k miles but I stayed within 8k rpm, no supercharger, and have never hit the limiter but a couple times very briefly.
Yes there are a long list of "must do" mods that I think are a complete waste of time.Keep in mind forums are sorta like one big info-commercial. Im glad someone else sees it.Yes there are a long list of "must do" mods that I think are a complete waste of time.
exactly,I cracked my sprocket in my 2012, luckily I caught it before things got ugly. If pushing things hard the cost outweighs the risk to me.
