For those that don’t know the name, Melling has been around since 1946 - and is a leader in designing/manufacturing standard and high flow oil pumps & gerotor OPG’s.

They have been a supporter of the Ford V8’s for many years (as well as other brands). They and their oil pumps have always been the “go to” for standard and high flow oil pump replacements in the Ford pushrod V8’s AND were the leader in bringing to market the OPG sets needed for the Ford 4.6’s and the 5.4’s waaaay before the S550 was even a seedling in design. Their pumps and OPG’s are of excellent quality and performance. I’ve used their parts in many prior engine builds and even when needing just for a stock replacement. Never had a single issue in any application.

I wanted to pass the above along because there’s always so much discussion on here about what Coyote or Coyote variant OPG set to use in XYZ application. There’s also been quite the threads outlining failures and poor quality of *some* aftermarket OPG sets too.

IMO, if you’re going to do an OPG upgrade and take the time to R&R it, do it ONCE and do not hesitate to go with the Melling OPG set mentioned in this linked article. I’ve also created a PDF of the article and attached it too for future reference in the event the link goes down.

Read the entire article but focus on the section called “The Solution” and why they should be your first go to over what else is out there. They know their stuff, they’re not a company just popping off parts and making unfounded claims with inferior parts or materials to jump on the S550 bandwagon to make a quick buck….

IMO, if it were me doing a Coyote build (N/A, Turbo, or S/C) where a quality HV OPG set is needed OR just wanting to replace the stock OPG’s for piece of mind, I would opt for the Melling brand knowing that is their speciality and they are an industry leader with such a critical part.

I hope the above is helpful and I have absolutely no affiliation to the Company, Author of the article or the Company that sponsored the article. I’m merely passing on good info on a critical part because there’s just been too many threads on this site about OPG failures, doubt on which OPG set to get, and sometimes poor quality replacements.

Enjoy.

I know your focus was on the oil pump gears and not necessarily the article, but they lost me at the part where they said it took a few attempts to get the engine back in time.

This does have me rethinking the $1100 Boundary pump that I've had on backorder for two months, though.

Edit- Melling must be really proud of those gears at almost $500.

TSS are over $700 the last time I checked and they are rated much higher than Boundry. I HAD boundry but was having oiling issues and last time we were in there, I went back to stock Gen 3 gears with FRPP sprocket.

No when I put the engine in, I put Boundry gears and a new set of FRPP phasers , chains and sprocket. When I went back in to re-time the car and swap out the oil filter housing, oil pressure sending unit and put stock oil pump gears back in, I kept the FRPP sprocket.
