With 1 can of Ceratec, 300ml, dispersed into 9500ml of oil, 10qts, around a 3% mix...You should not notice much of a difference in appearance of the oil. I have this mix currently and have not noticed any difference In appearance when checking the oil on the dip stick. When I do the next oil change I will get a better look.

For some reason, car manufacturers caution against oil additives.

The moly will, as someone said, be burnished down to a layer in the millionths of an inch, but first the goopy additive has to circulate through the engine.
No, the real reason they don't recommend using oil additives, is because a lot of additives out there are nothing more than snake oil. Some are simply.oil thickeners that really don't do much of anything. Slick 50 is one that even had lawsuits against them for causing damage to engines. However, there are some that actually do what they say, but as blanket statement, the auto manufacturers say to stay away from them because overall the additive industry doesn't offer much benefit to most oils that already have good additive packs in their oil to begin with.

The top ones on the market now are probably Ceratec, Tribotex, and Archoil. They actually do work.

In what way does Slick 50 damage engines? I have not heard this...not being a user of any additives, that story went under my radar.

the oil will look like liquid paste.
If I remember correctly, you only had about 1000 miles on your oil when you dumped it... Not really fair to say the oil will look like liquid paste based off of 1000 miles IMHO.

Mine too. But apparently a few years back there was a class action lawsuit against Slick 50, for some reason. I guess it was doing something to damage engines. I guess if you use it a lot, it settles out, and builds up in the oil pan, and some people got clogged pick up tubes on their oil pumps causing loss of oil flow and damaged bearings, etc. Only reason I know about it, is I read it in another forum a while back. I think this was the thread.

OK, a noob question: Assuming the dipstick shows full, do I need to drain 300ml of oil to allow for a 300ml can of Ceratec? Be kind; I haven’t changed oil on a car since 1971.

There are 2 little holes in the dipstick. Is the level so high that it covers the hole on the top? If it is, I would want to remove a smidgen of oil before adding any more. Apparently this engine is somewhat susceptible to problems when over filling the oil.

There is also a checkered area for the range indication. If the level is anywhere in that range, but not covering the top hole, then adding 1 bottle of Ceratec is not going to harm anything.

Thank you! That’s exactly what I needed to know.

Saw some ugly looking pictures on BITOG of an oil sump with Ceratec all settled to the bottom of it. Just food for thought.

I'd like to see that too, since Ceratec is known for not settling out. And even if it did a little, the turbulence of the oil when running easily mixes it up. It's not some heavy black sludge buildup like you would see from excessive impurities in 30 year old Quaker State oil.

I did the change today. Excited to see if this gets rid of the ticker tape machine sound.

I just did 5 quarts, poured in the ceratec, then filled the bottle backup up from the next 5 quart jug. It was right on the mark for the dip stick.

I've not seen so much Liqui Moly talk outside of the of the German car circles.
