I talked to one of my local dealerships I do service with and they've replaced two engines. They said Ford Performance wanted those engines back for research and said just replace it with a whole new long block because the engineers wanted to see every piece of the engine. It was a no questions asked proposition. Basically the process went "there's this so and so issue? Replace it and we want the flawed engine back in Dearborn NOW."
What really makes this wrong is the lack of transparency. It is definitely not my first car that has issues with the motor - I guess I have a knack for ‘weird” motors that are fun to drive. What makes this really wrong is the total and absolute denial that something is wrong coupled to obvious attempts to cover it up. Definitely not cool nor pervasive to building a long term relationship with your customers.

I guess if my car had "looser" clearances I'd prefer that. I don't have excessive consumption issues and the piston slap isn't too bad. But I also broke my car in like a man, not like a bouquet of pansies.
Can you repost your break-in procedure? I think I pansied mine, might try something different on motor #2, assuming that's where I'm heading.

I autocrossed my car at 200 miles.

Couldn't comment on that personally but every dealership I've talked to has been super open about what's up with the 350's theyve worked on and they're not even my car.

always some wet towel trying to bring down everyone else because of some misfortune of others. I say enjoy the car. Everything has issues.

I have a MY 18 (I'll have to check the build date) and Im not losing oil. Catch can collects quite a bit though... it's not a daily driver so when I get it out, I'm usually raising hell. Runs good, no piston slap, no oil use that I can tell. Great car. It will be getting boost via procharger in the new year.

It is not the dealerships that are covering things up. in this case The lack of transparency from Ford on what is going on is a problem. Not very confidence inspiring as I said.

I'd like to hear more news about updated piston rings. My 2018 was built in Jan. Since they stopped production for Nov & Dec, however they started MY18 builds in Oct, I don't know what build dates the engines are (ie, did they produce engine in Oct to be installed in Jan?)

Is there a date code on these engines? If so, where?

Oh, and my piston slap started at about 850 miles, one morning, out of the blue. I know exactly where I was when it happened. It's textbook: happens between 2,500-3,000 RPM, only happens with neutral load and goes away if I get off or on the gas a little. And it goes away once warmed up over about 140*F

I never put a load on a cold engine. I broke in the engine per the owners manual.

Hoping to never need the extended 8 year, transferable warranty I bought

I like to disassemble things.
Can't speak to your "out of the blue" mention Adam but what you are describing are operating characteristics of forged pistons.

An earlier post described the onset of piston slap as out of the blue, it just started one day. My car was exactly the same. No noise AT ALL for the first 800 or so mile, and then one day, there it was. Seems odd that a forged piston would not slap one day, then slap every day thereafter (when cold). But clearly, my experience was not unique.

I started a separate thread on mine thinking it was something else before I learned all the classic signs. But yea, mine also was out of the blue at just over 3,000 miles (I think). One day it was dead silent, the next start, there it was!

Hmm, that does help. And it just goes to show that maybe ignorance is bliss!

So turn up the radio (or the exhaust valves) and drive on. :sunglasses:
