BBQ tick - another attempt to understand

The tick has been around since the Coyote came out in the 2011 model year. I think the low rpm supposed piston slap is new to the 3rd gen Coyote.

Ahh, so thank you. I am in the wrong thread as I mixed up my ticks.. I'm referring to the supposed piston slap noise. Thank you for schooling me. Either way, this should be taken care of and I believe Ford knows full well what the causes are for both of them. People need to organize with the F pickup folks and blast social media with this... Maybe ##weticktoo lol

My BBQ Tick is solved!! It's 100% CAVITATION!

Today I added a tea-spoon of extremely fine carbon powder to 1/2 quart of oil & mix. Drove it 10 miles & my tick is GONE! So, far.

Why doesn't all 5.0's have the tick or one is worse than another? My guess, build tolerance stack-up from engine to engine could have something to do with it.

I found this on the diesel forums, interesting read and I’m not sure what to take away from this carbon research. Carbon wears metal faster when ZDDP is present yet somehow is a good friction when no ZDDP is present. Can anyone make more sense of this research paper?

Did you have the tick also present when revving in park?

Now that your tick is gone, I wonder what was damaged, worn faster because of cavitation.

Yes, I could hear it up to 1500 to 1800 RPM.

Damage? I doubt any, time will tell. Bore scoped all cylinders all good. No metal in the oil.

So the fix is to add carbon powder to are engine every so often.... I dont think we should have to put in additives to make our engines sound normal.

It's a fix for me. I don't want a new engine or short block. My engine runs like a bad mother. They can give me a new one when It blows-up. I was also told you can try different oils & weight, but which one I don't know. Sounds like a lot of time & money to find the one that works for your engine.

It's a fix for me. I don't want a new engine or short block. My engine runs like a bad mother. They can give me a new one when It blows-up. I was also told you can try different oils & weight, but which one I don't know. Sounds like a lot of time & money to find the one that works for your engine.

What kinda powder is this where did you buy it?
