Why does teh Ranger get this nice small thing:

but the Mustang get this huge thing that looks like it's trying to pretend to be a manual? The smaller shifter would make the little storage in front of it easier to get to and use. As much as my knee would like me to move to an A10, every time I see that shifter I just cringe. Its probably the worst part of the Mustangs interior.

Might be able to swap it out for a rotary dial one, from an Expedition or Bronco sport. People do this all the time in the F150's with the stupid lay flat thingy.

One theory of mine is that some people still like the option to control their automatics via shift lever even with the paddles available.

Well at least I know I do lol.

This goes back to 2015 when these small stubby shifters were not in style yet. Just the way it is when you are driving a car that hasn't changed a TON since 2015. One of the worst newer car features are these shifters that don't actually move along a track and are spring loaded, so you can't really shift them by feel, you need to look down or onto a display where it tells you what gear you are. Plus they just feel like toys.

Look at how that poor kid that played Chekhov in the newer Star Trek movies died with that shitty shifter they designed. Hope that keeps the engineer that designed that up at night.

The shifter is not the worst part of that interior at all. It's the computer monitors stuck to the dashboard and the fact they got rid of the iconic dash.

People still keep defending this hideous thing, it's literally the worst selling Mustang in history.

I thought I was the only one who thought that.

You're right that the stock shifter is too tall. I replaced mine with a short-stem White Madness kit. I hate the stock auto shifter. Had to hack an inch off of the stock stem but it's much better. It does indeed look more like a manual, and I like it much more this way.

It’s to pretend it’s a manual, that’s all it ever was. I agree it looks dumb, they’ve had plenty of time to change it by now

I don't think that the Auto stick is pretending to be a manual at all. Look at all the auto Mustangs since their beginning to now that had T handle sticks. They are all floor mounted. So I don't get that argument.

The first thing anybody notices that isn't around a mustang all day when they look in my interior is the long ass shifter. Just Ford being Ford. It looks like a manual at first glance but even worse.

The s550 is the same way. They're long as shit. I agree it's the worst part of the s550s interior and 2nd worst of the s650s.

The argument is just that they look similar, which they do.

I get that, and Ford wanted to keep as much commonality between the manual and auto with trim rings and such. Personally I had a love hate relationship with mine. To me it looked stout, felt good in the hand, but kind of looked out of place. I also did not like the thumb button release on the top. Some days my arthritis acted up and I could not depress it. Had to use my palm to press down. Of course that's not very comfortable. I did switch it out for a custom White Madness shifter where you press down with your palm. To your point it looks even more like a manual now, but that's not why I did it. I needed an easier way to shift it out of park. But unlike others, I left the auto trim ring in place so folks would know I wasn't trying to fool anyone.
