Hi everyone,

I've owned my 2019 GT since 2018 and wanted to wait for the warranty to expire before I tuned. I understand the basics of tuning and used to run a Ford Focus ST fullbolt ons, big turbo etc.

On the ST I used to COBB Access port which was a dream to work with. I know the N gauge used to be around but was discontinued. Is there an equivalent to this?

I have a corsa exhaust on the vehicle and plan on getting kooks 1 7/8" catted headers/p51c intake this winter. I want to go with Palm Beach Dyno for the tune.

I am guessing I need to purchase a SXT hand held tuner to load the tune?

I haven't reached out to them yet.

Thanks for any advice

Hey! I came from a BT ST too, also used a Cobb AP, so I think I know what you're looking for.

The AP is a really nice piece of hardware and nobody makes anything comparable for the mustang. It makes sense that you'd look towards an nGauge but I went through this too and I believe its not the right choice.

Cobb has the full package, they have really good custom software and features, excellent live monitoring, and easy datalogging. Their software is very simple to use and works well. Cobb's system is so polished and sleek that its not even obvious how much better it is than most tuning solutions for other cars.

There's three big choices in my mind at this point
HPtuners (HPT): RTD+/MPVi3+
- widely supported
- good hardware
- ok software
PCMtech
- newcomer, small support for now
- ok hardware (if used with a big name tuner, can be used with HPT RTD+ dongle (cheaper))
- best software, better than cobb
nGauge
- not much support ( i think its just lund and a few others at this point)
- near end of life
- very good hardware, only built in monitoring device available.
- ok software (uses HPT software)
- can be hard to unlock/use on another car

In my opinion, the only option that makes any sense is PCMtech. They have software that is honestly leagues ahead of any of the other options, and that is the most critical part of a tuning solution. If you work with lund or a few other big name guys who support PCMtech you can get custom features, like map switching, flat foot shifting, rolling anti-lag, and even true flex fuel with a sensor. These type of features are not available on devices that use HPT software. IMO, that alone makes it a clear winner and the most comparable to Cobb's software.

If you want live monitoring of data like a Cobb AP, you can buy a CAN bus data monitor and put it anywhere you like in the car. Alternatively you can jailbreak Sync 3 and install an app to monitor data from a bluetooth OBD2 dongle on the screen of your car.

Best of luck!

What are your goals for the tune?
Intake exhaust catted headers on a tire with a reliable/safe tune on 93 octane that runs 11’s in the 1/4 mile for a car that gets 2-3k miles a year.

You can still find new nGauges for sale online and used ones here on M6G.

A quick search revealed a few companies that may have them:

Thank for the links!

Hey man, thanks so much for the input and information. I do feel Cobb AP has spoiled many people in terms of what they offer haha. It was amazing.

really appreciate the information you put forward, I will deep dive these providers. Are you running the

interesting, I haven’t heard of them- thanks!

Contact whoever you decide to go with and ask them what tuning device they use before getting one on your own.
That is the plan, just looking to get a wide view of everything

93 octane na tunes are super simple because ford pretty much has everything optimized. The biggest improvements really just bring the timing in a little sooner and helps with torque response. I posted in another thread all the changes I would make for a 93 na tune.

So as far as something that is comparable to the ngauge... You won't really find one, sadly. SCT X4 and BDX are close to it but a tad different. With HP Tuners software, you can use the RTD+ with a laptop or the MPVI3+ with the TDN app on your phone.

All are fairly simple to use but have their own designs. Tuners will use either as well. IMO, an SCT X4 will be the closest thing you can find for features.

With that said, using Palm Beach Dyno would be fine and we have had great luck with over the years. If you want to use Hp Tuners software, they can use that as well!

When you add the headers, there is no need for a tune update either. Your front widebands will make the corrections for it too!

Let me know if I can help with anything else as well.

thanks for the reply, info and link. Oh wow I thought I would need to have the tune coincide with the install of headers, or updated if headers were added. Interesting.

Hey this is Junior from Need4speed Motorsports. I love my ngauge, if you can find a used ngauge that is still unlockable I would highly recommend that. Data logging and loading tune is super easy. The next best tuning device I have seen is the hp tuners rtd. Fairly simple but a computer or smartphone is needed I think. I would talk to your tuner first to see what devices they use and recommend.

I posted a separate thread, but it didn’t get much interest…but I have a handful of friends extremely happy with Knox Tuning. Just can’t really find too much feedback on the forums about them.
