Anyone recommend a good replacement battery? Looks like between the cold and the stereo killed my OEM. What's everyone running?

I just run the Super starts from O’Reilly. The one in my 67 is 13 years old and still works great. The last set I had in my Cummins lasted 6 years and may have gone longer but I developed a draw that kept draining them and eventually killed the reserve capacity. I haven’t had to replace the battery in the 15 yet but it will get the same thing.

luck of the draw unless you go high end. Long rabbit hole of choosing . Most are all made in the same three places anyway. The original FOMOCO battery was 4 years 7 months old and I changed it for precaution. Was testing a little weak.

Just replaced mine with a group 96R with the best warranty, which happened to be through my work. 5 year free replacement.

It appears that pro-rated warranties are disappearing and everyone is going to a 3yr free replacement.
With that being said, I have had good luck with Duracell from Sam's, and the Ever Start Maxx line from Wal Mart.

I've got a decent stereo that I'm pulling just under 2k watts rms...wanted a battery upgrade over OEM when the time came. I know it clicks everything on from time to time so for sure getting extra draw compared to stock. It's a 21, so about 4 years is fair imo.

I have the same power draw in my GT500 and installed an XS Power D4700 with short posts. Fits with only minor bulge of the battery cover.

A few basic facts about batteries.
  • Their size (LxWxH) limits the actual energy available (a fact of chemisty). Note that CCA # of all batteries falls within a pretty narrow range. Spending more does not yield much more CCA.
  • Spending more does not really guarantee a longer life. The cost of ownership on a monthly basis during the warranty period also falls within a reasonable range.
  • As @barron64 said above, battery warranties have gone from pro-rated to 3-year no questions asked warranty (a good thing IMO). The pro-rated scheme was an attempt to get you to return and replace the crappy battery with another crappy one from the same place. With the 3-year no questions warranty, you can get lucky on the day before expiration or unlucky on the day after.

So given my point of view of trying to keep the cost of ownership low, I tend to consider Sam's Club, Ford, parts houses, etc. I try to stay aware of the early warning signs that the battery is getting tired, and then take it someplace for a free load test. This gives me enough time to start shopping for a replacement.

Do not interpret this post as me slamming the high-end batteries. They certainly are high quality and have their place for those willing to pay for them.
