I have a chance at a 2018 PP2 with just under 40k on the clock. It’s a 301A with PP2 and Rocaro seats. My local dealership should be getting it from a sister dealership in the next few days. I assume the 301A package means it has the 4 inch screen and analog gauges - is that right?

Here’s the thing. I was able to get my hands on the service record and there’s been a transmission issue. The service record reads:

“C - Grinds when shifting into 4th gear. C- Test drove vehicle to duplicate grinds going into 4th. Put vehicle on lift. Checked fluid level - good condition. Removed the transmission and mounted to fixture for inspection. Found 3rd/4th syntonizer and 4th gear locking ring worn. C- Overhauled the transmission. Reinstalled in vehicle. Added Fluid. Retested. Good.”

What do you guys think? The car is currently sitting at the sister dealership “waiting on a part”. The same dealership repaired the transmission and they are a reputable, well know dealership a couple of cities over. Should I stay (run?) away or start pushing to see if I can grab it? If I shouldn’t be too concerned, what’s a reasonable price for a car with just under 40k and a rebuilt transmission? I think it may be priced well under market…

Brand new here, but owned an 03 Mach 1 back in the day. Starting to get the itch again!!

You don't say anything about timing. If Ford did the work I think it's guaranteed for 2 years. I'd ask to be sure.
Personally I wouldn't be concerned about a rebuilt trans. I might even look at it as a positive.
I also don't really see that having a negative effect on the price. It's not like an accident.

Do you mean timing as in when was the transmission rebuilt? The warranty claim was made in February of 23 at the same dealership that has the car right now. I’ve been told they are waiting on a part, but my local dealership didn’t know which part or if it were transmission related. They just think they will have it in the next week or so. I’m guessing the car hasn’t been available for sale since the repair was made and I think that was recently.

I get what you’re saying. I’ve already been told by a friend it shouldn’t impact price, but I don’t have the technical expertise to make that call on my own. I figured I better get some opinions. It sure does feel like it should impact the price when you’re on the buying end.

Yes, timing of the rebuild.
I guess it's perspective, when you're buying you want any little thing to decrease the price. When selling, it's the other way around...
I look at it in the same way as if I were looking at a used car with fresh brakes, it's something I don't have to worry about later.
In this case, if it's a fresh rebuild with a warranty, well, you're not going to get that on many used cars...

I wouldn’t be concerned about repairs done under warranty. And it likely won’t have much if any impact on price, it’s not like it brands the title. Warranty work is not uncommon. The part they’re waiting for and what it’s for should be clarified as well.

Regarding 301a, that gets you the 8” touchscreen

The bigger concern would be, has the car has been tuned and if so, does it come with the tuning device? There are several people, who have purchased used cars and encountered this issue, which btw can be very difficult and expensive to overcome. A couple of guys have even purchased cars with E85 tunes flashed. In fact, one member here on M6G came to my house a week or so ago and I confirmed this for him. He was actually running 93 octane fuel in the car while on the E85 tune. Just a huge mess to have to sort out, so be very aware of what you’re getting.

A quick test to confirm whether your car is on an E85 tune is to check the gauges on the instrument cluster. If the Air Fuel Ratio is reading 9.8 then you have an E85 tune in the car. Again, if tuned and no tuning device, run (not walk) away from that deal.

What’s a fair price?
MSRP x 0.85 x 0.93^(2023-2018-1)

The trans was rebuilt probably because of a bent but not yet broken shift fork. Common problem with 2018 and early 19 cars.

The dealer ask is likely insane. Most still act like it's 2021 when they could charge a kings ransom.

2018 PP2 301A with Recaros and AE here. Car has been great, just over 22K now. I absolutely love this car. My dealer recently offered me $36,500 for mine (about 2 months ago). To me with current used values and the rare PP2 package, it’s worth more than that to me. But, without prejudice, I’d say with 40K, if in very clean condition, a fair price would be in the $32-$35K range.

The 2018 MT82 had issues with 1-2 and 3-4 clutch fork failures. Most likely what that warranty repair was about. You can search my user ID on here with the words "MT82 clutch fork" and find the thread I posted a while back that contains all of the Ford TSB's for the 2018 MT82 issues.

I don't think that prior repair history warrants any concerns...

Unfortunately the work that was done was under factory warranty so it would be 1 year warranty, not sure if there is a mileage warranty or if unlimited(ford used to be unlimited miles on all repairs but with 1year/2year etc on them) so basically whatever the end date for the factory powertrain is would be when the warranty on the work performed expires or 1 year and should be unlimited miles.

I used to work at a Ford dealer (currently at Subaru now, wasn't my choice to leave the last one but it is what it is).

Hmmmm. I had a head gasket replaced under warranty and my paperwork says 2 years warranty on the repair. That's what I based my comment on. The smart thing to do, as I said in that comment, is to ask the dealer.
But even a 1 year warranty on a transmission repair on a used car is still decent piece of mind.
